Abstract

Phenolic acids are one of the many secondary metabolites causing toxic upon the growth and development of plant. Phenolic acids are produced by plant and subsequently released into soil, and appears to be involved in biochemical interaction between plants and other living organisms in soil. The research was conducted to study the effect of various kinds and doses of phenolic acids on nitrogenases activities and cholorophyll content of mungbean. Research was done in the glass house of Soil Science Departemen, Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University (GMU) from April to June 2004. The experiment was arranged by randomized block design in three replications. The treatment consist of four kinds phenolic acid i.e. vanilic, p-coumaric, ferulic and p-1hydroxybenzoic with concentration at 250, 500, 1000 and 1500 mg kg-Â respectively. One treatment was without phenolic acids as control. Result indicated that phenolic acids could reduce nitrogenases activities and chlorophyll content up to 53.35% and 29.98% respectively. The toxicity of p-hydroxybenzoic against both nitrogenases activities and chlorophyll content was higher than other phenolic acids.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

One field experiment had been conducted at Institute for Research and Agricultural Technology Evaluation at Taman Bogo FieldSta,to screen some Bradyhyzobium inoculants on soybean mutant lines developed for acid soil.Inoculants evaluated were single strain B-22,and its mixed inoculants (B-22+B37), (B-22 + G49), and (B-22+TAL 102) on two soybean mutant lines No.07 and 58,and cv.Wilis as check variety. Plant growth and N yield were determined at pod development (R4) and grain maturity (R8) stages. The effect of inoculation significantly influenced nodul-ation and N yield and tended to increase plant dry weight 25%.Mixed inoculant (B-22+B-37) showed good symbiotic compatibility with the three soybean genotypes tested, whereas inoculant(B- 22+G49) only showed good compatibility with mutant line No.58.Cultivar Wilis had broader symbiotic spectrum as compared to mutant line No. 07 and 58.The effect of plant genotypes, and its interaction with inoculants were significant on grain and N yield. It was observed that at pod development stage, the plant growth of mutant line No. 07 were slower than the other genotypes but it had better nutrient translocation rate to grain which resulted grain yield of cv. Wilis. The results showed that this mutant line could be developed for this area.

Abstract

Anatomical study on native Begonia in Cibodas Botanical Garden was conducted to determine their stomata types. Stomata 32 native Begonia were prepared by semi-permanent methods. Parameters observed in this study were stomata type, number, and size of stomata. The result showed that all Begonia species have anisocytic stomata and those stomata only found in abaxial leaves. Based on number of stomata, these Begonia can be classified into two groups: single stomata and single-grouped stomata. Generally, Begonia has a single stomata, however, single-grouped stomata is a determinate character of Begonia sect. Reichenheimia and sect. Diploclinium in CBG. The differences of stomata distribution in B. ozotothrix with other members of section Petermannia are needed to be clarified further.

Abstract

This study describes on development of habitat suitability for Sumatran tiger in Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP). In this study remotely-sensed data set were linked with tiger and it prey survey using camera trap to identify the environmental and human factors that influences the tiger's potential habitat, and to develop a spatial model as well as in BBSNP. All at once, the study showed that the potential model for estimating the tiger's potential habitat suitability could be developed using environmental and human factors. The most significant factors that influence the tiger habitat suitability in Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park are human factors such as distance to road and distance to forest edge and the environmental factor i.e. the number of tiger prey. The verification of the model shows that the model is capable to estimate the probability of the tiger presence having accuracy of approximately 78%. The model shows that there is no significant difference between the predicted data and actual data and having mean deviation less than 10%.

Abstract

Superparasite is a parasitic plant that lives on other parasitic plant. Viscum articulatum Burm. f. (Viscaceae) is a parasitic species of mistletoe that grows on other parasitic species of mistletoes, thus a superparasite. In Purwodadi Botanic Gardens-LIPI, East Java V. articulatum grows on Dendrophthoe pentandra and Macrosolen tetragonus. In Cibodas Botanic Gardens-LIPI, West Java it grows on D. pentandra and M. cochinchinensis. Dendrophthoe pentandra is the most infected species. The infected mistletoes are regarded as the first stage hosts. The living collections at both Botanic Gardens parasited by the three mistletoes are regarded as the second stages host.Investation preference for first and second host stages is studied in this research.
