Abstract

This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the reading literacy skills of Phase A students (Grade II) at SDN Sambirejo 01, Bringin District, Semarang Regency, through an ethnographic approach. It explores literacy practices both inside and outside the classroom, the social interactions involved in reading activities, students' perceptions of reading, as well as the social and cultural factors that influence the development of their reading literacy skills. The ethnographic method was applied using a series of in-depth and comprehensive qualitative data collection techniques. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Grade II students to understand their perspectives, experiences, and beliefs related to reading. Interviews were also conducted with the school principal and Phase A classroom teachers to obtain their views on students' literacy development, reading instruction strategies, and the challenges faced in the process. The factors affecting students' reading abilities include internal factors (such as interest, individual abilities, and personal characteristics) and external factors (such as the learning environment, family support, the socio-cultural context of the school, and the socio-cultural context of the community). This study is expected to provide valuable insights for teachers, schools, and educational policymakers in designing and implementing more effective and contextual literacy instruction strategies, as well as in fostering students' interest in reading and improving their literacy skills from an early age. The researcher suggests developing and implementing reading literacy programs that have not yet been realized and promoting social and cultural character development through reading literacy activities.

Abstract

Algebraic thinking ability is the ability to connect algebraic concepts with various problems, both in academic contexts and in everyday life. The purpose of this study was to describe junior high school students’ algebraic thinking ability in solving mathematics problems based on ethnomathematics. The study was conducted at a private junior high school in the city of Semarang during the 2025–2026 academic year. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through tests, interviews, and documentation. The subjects consisted of three female students categorized based on high, moderate, and low mathematical ability. The results showed that the student with high mathematical ability was able to fulfill all indicators of algebraic thinking ability, the student with moderate mathematical ability fulfilled only four indicators, while the student with low mathematical ability fulfilled only two indicators of algebraic thinking ability.

Abstract

Education of children aged 5-6 years is a critical foundation for children's cognitive and motor development, but the ability to recognize numbers 1-20 and gross motor skills of children in Pembina State Kindergarten, Pecalungan District is still low. This is triggered by monotonous conventional learning methods, the lack of innovative media, and the lack of integration of local wisdom values. This study developed a snake and ladder game media based on local wisdom to overcome these problems while preserving regional culture. The purpose of the study was to test the feasibility, effectiveness, and practicality of the media in improving the ability to recognize numbers and gross motor skills of children aged 5-6 years. The research method used the Research and Development (RD) approach with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model, involving 20 group B students as subjects. The research instruments included validation sheets of material and media experts, teacher-student response questionnaires, cognitive tests, and gross motor observation rubrics. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics, normality tests, t-tests, and N-Gain calculations. The validation results showed that the media was considered very feasible by material experts (87.5%) and media experts (85%). The t-test proved a significant increase in post-test scores (average 80) compared to pre-test (55) with N-Gain 0.6 (moderate category). Gross motor skills increased, namely 70% of students reached the category of Developing According to Expectations (BSH) and 30% Developing Very Well (BSB). The practicality of the media reached 93.33% based on teacher assessment. The conclusion of the study confirmed that local wisdom-based snakes and ladders media is effective in improving academic and motor skills, while strengthening children's cultural identity. The implication is that this media is recommended as an alternative for interactive culture-based learning in children aged 5-6 years.
