Abstract

The objectives of this study are;1) to know kinds of teachers’ questioning strategies that teacher use in the classroom. 2) to know the way the teachers use the questioning strategies in the classroom. The design of the research is descriptive qualitative. The writer got the data of this research from interview notes. The observation sheet source of the data research were from the teacher and students. The Instrument used are observation sheet, interview, and document. The techniques for analyzing the data is descriptive. The steps were; comprising interactive reducing the data, presenting the data, and drawing conclusion. The result of this research shows that are: 1) The teaching strategies are; (a) the teaching techniques used lecturing, group project and small group discussion, (b) the seating arrangement, the students seating position changed, (c) the teacher give feedback when the students have difficulties, the teacher give some clue to the students to help them understand the material given, (d) the teacher evaluates the students: the teacher given task and motivations for the students. 2) The problems faced by the teacher are the classroom conditions, the crowded conditions, controlling individually, the interaction between the teacher and students in the classroom is ineffective, the students' less vocabulary, the limited media and the problems faced by the students are lack of confidence, the students have difficulties in translation. The conclusion are Not all English teachers in SMP PGRI 01 Semarang have good understanding of how to implement teacher’s questioning. Some of them still have some problems with their understanding. It is caused by some reasons, such as: (1) the teachers do not want to get out of their comfort zone, some of them are thinking that the most important part of teaching is how to make the students understand the materials; (2) they can not move on from their old views of teaching English in the classroom; (3) last but not least, because the training done by the authoritative government is not sufficient to make them mastering teacher’s questioning.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are (1) To find out the vocabulary mastery of the fourth grade students of SD 2 Papringan using animal pictures, (2) To know the problem faced by the fourth grade students of SD 2 Papringan in studying vocabulary using animal pictures, and (3) To know the possible solutions to overcome the problems are faced by the fourth grade students of SD 2 Papringan in studying vocabulary using animal picture. The subjects are all the fourth grade students of SD 2 Papringan. The total number of the students are 28 students. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The research instruments used test and questionaire. The result of the result shows that (1) Students’ vocabulary using animal pictures as a teaching aid is appropiate in teaching vocabulary. It is proven of the test result that 11 (39%) students who got A (Outstanding), 9 (23%) students who got B (Above average), 8 (29%) students who got C (Average), 0 (0%) student who got D (Below average), and 0 (0%) student who got E (Insufficient). It indicates that most of the students are able to do the test because the mean of the students’ score is 81, 57. (2) In teaching learning process there were some problems faced by students are; the students of the fourth grade do not like learning English, they do not know about simple English vocabulary, the students of the fourth grade do not know the English animal names, the students of the fourth grade feel difficult in learning vocabulary without using picture, and the students of the fourth grade do not like to be taught vocabulary, especially animal without pictures. (3) For possible solutions to overcome the problems faced by the students are; the teacher has to select the interesting media to the students in learning English in order to make the students feel enjoy in studying, the teacher should give more information about English animal names, the teacher has to use picture as the teaching aid in order to avoid difficulties in teaching and learning vocabulary, and the teacher has to use picture as a teaching aid to attract the students’ interest in learning vocabulary in particular about animal pictures, so they do not feel bored.

Abstract

The aims of this research are: (1) to what extent is the students’ vocabulary mastery taught using realia, (2) to what extent is the students’ vocabulary mastery taught using word card, and (3) is there any difference in vocabulary mastery between the students taught using realia and those taught using word card.In this research the writer used experimental quantitative research. The population of this research consists of 150 students. The sample of this reserach class X.1 used realia and class X.2 used word card. The instrument of the research was test.According to the calculation, the result showed that t-test obtained > t-table. The result obtained 1,84 in significance 5% with db = 29. It was consulted into t-table in significance level 0,95, t test (1,84) is higher than ttable (0,95). It means that there is a significant difference between teaching vocabulary using realia and word card of the tenth grade students of MA Al-Faizin Bangsri Jepara. The sudents taught realia class have big influence than the students taught using word card because using realia made the students more interest and easy to understand in teaching vocabulary mastery process

Abstract

The use of code-mixing, especially for English Code-Mixing, by Malay Kuala Lumpur Native Speaker, becomes the main issue in this research. Thus through this research, it will be found out the reasons for this language error happens, the impacts for using the code-mixing, in terms of sociolinguistic view. The sample limitation is only 10 (ten) people of Malay Kuala Lumpur native speaker, who are randomly selected.  The research is a case study and descriptive qualitative research, which arises the issue of the use of code-mixing among the Malay Kuala Lumpur native speaker who are taking their study in Indonesia. Data are collected through observation to samples which are also as the population.  Through the brief observation it can be concluded that the use of code-mixing because of usual habit of using English among the respondents, added by the fact that English is also their second language which is widely spoken in daily bases or in formal bases. The use of English Code-mixing is also for the need to highlight the speaker in terms of they will be looked as an intellectual and elite people. The impact of using code-mixing cannot be confirmed that it brings a negative effect, but it is not possible that the existence and even the use of Malay language can be slowly moved among their own native speaker.

Abstract

The main elements of teaching are included teachers, students, and textbooks. Many people argue that the students are the key success of the teaching. Thinking to against that many people belief, many studies pointed the view that textbooks are the key of learning. It based on the assumption that both teacher and students are depend on the book in learning process. Therefore, great care and attention to the quality of text-book itself has to be taken in selecting the most appropriate textbook that fit to some factors as teacher’s interests, teaching objectives and finally students’ needs as well. Textbook evaluation checklist by Daoud and Celce-Murcia (1979) is used in this study because it is most appropriate for evaluating this current textbook. In this current study, the researcher evaluated K-13 English text book used by XII grade students of MAN 1 Bojonegoro as instructional material in the teaching and learning. Some aspects to be evaluated based on Textbook evaluation checklist by Daoud and Celce-Murcia (1979) including subject matter, vocabulary and structures, exercises, illustration, and physical make-up. This study is important as it hope will find out the strength as well as the weaknesses areas of the course book. This current study has been developed in order to analyze an available specialized course book for the second grade students. The results of the current study have important implications both for language teachers and the improvement of the course book

Abstract

The study aimed to find out whether any influences compossing narrative text to the students writing ability at seventh grade students of STIT Muhammadiyah Tanjung Redeb and to find out the level ability after students compossing narrative text. The  scope of study writing narrative text at the Seventh Grade Students of STIT Muhammadiyah  Tanjung Redeb. The method of this research is quantitative. The population in this study was the whole seventh grade students in STIT Muhammadiyah  Tanjung Redeb, which is enlisted in the academic year of 2014/2015. The seventh grades belong of one class each classes consisted of about 36 students. The writer takes  15 students of them as the research sample (groub B) by using random sampling (namely a method of sample taking by mixly without paying attention to the grade of number of population. The method of data collection used documentation and test and the method of data analys used SPPS 21 Version. The result showed that shows the pre-test score of the class was 11.617 with standard deviation of 3.065 and the post-test score was 17.617 with standard deviation of 2.146. The post-test scores were higher than the pre-test scores.

Abstract

Abstract: When teachers conduct a lesson, the activity of posing questions always appears in it. The activity of posing questions includes the skills of basic questioning and advanced questioning in which a teacher must acquire. The focus of the study is on the basic questioning techniques only. ?é?áThe purposes of this study are aimed at finding: 1) the basic questioning component skill used by the novice teachers in the classroom, 2) the types of question used by the novice teachers in the classroom, and 3) the levels of questioning category used by the novice teachers in the classroom. This discourse study was based on the analysis of the teacher talk in class. The analysis was based on the recorded data of the five novices when they conducted lessons in class. The recorded data were transcribed. From the transcriptions, teachers?óÔé¼Ôäó talk were identified and classified into types of questions, levels of questions, and basic questioning components. The findings of the study are: 1) novices used higher number of closed questions; 2) there were more low level questions conducted by novices; 3) the large number of the skill components in their teaching activities were the distributing, pausing and reacting. ?é?á Key Words: Novice Teachers, Technique of Questioning,

Abstract

The study is to examine the improvement in vocabulary comprehension and maintenance of English as foreign language students at SMK Maárif 1 of Kebumen because of this of integrating YouTube in their reading classes. The study also investigated the perceptions of both students as well as teachers towards the inclusion of YouTube on the development of vocabulary. One hundred intermediate level learners aged between 14-17 years old participated in the study. Students were divided into two organizations: an experimental group who watched YouTube during the reading activities and a control group who was not exposed to the videos. Data were collected using pre-tests and post-tests in addition to questionnaires. The findings of the analysis reveal that the group who viewed the YouTube clips outperformed the group who was simply not subjected to YouTube videos in the posttest. The results clearly show that YouTube offered statistically significant effects on the students' vocabulary acquisition. The findings of the study indicate that the participants positively viewed the use of YouTube in their lessons. The findings also exposed significant improvement in the students’ vocabulary achievement. The implications of the findings are discussed within the context of foreign language learning and teaching

Abstract

The objective of this research is: To find out how the generic structure is written in the narrative texts, to find out the problems faced by the students of SMA Yasiha Gubug the academic 2011/2012 is written in the narrative texts, and to find out the solution of the problems. The writer uses descriptive quantitative. It is class XI IPA I that consists of 39 students. The instrument used to collect data was the writing test and observation sheet.The results of the research shows the mastery on writing based generic structure of narrative text class XI Senior High School Yasiha Gubug academic year 2012 is categorized into good score with the average 75 and the mean score belongs to the interval 66-79 and the result of observation sheet shows that there were 27 students in level of excellent, 10 students in good and 3 students in level fair. The problems that faced by the students in arranging the generic structure of written narrative text are they did not listen the material attentively given the teacher, the students only got the information from what they read at glance and based on their experiences before. The solution of the problem in arranging the generic structure of written narrative text is the students have to listen their teacher when she explains the material narratives. For example reading a legend and some books include narrative. Based on the result above, the writer suggests that the teacher should apply all of the things in the syllabi of genre in organizing the teaching learning process and the teacher has to give explain the generic structure of narrative text more clearly and give more exercises and more attention to the result of the assignment which are given to the students so that the teacher knows how far the achievement of the students in mastering material.

Abstract

Morphological analysis is the main areas in studying vocabulary. The objective of the research are: 1). To find out the derivational affixes found in The Land of Five Towers Novel. 2). To find out the contribution of derivational affixes from The Land of Towers a Novel. The Land of Five Towers Novel by A. Fuadi is a novel inspired by a true story from the author, that is Ahmad Fuadi. Having seeing such phenomenon, the writer found that mastering English is not easy if the students are lack of vocabulary. This research aimed at finding out the derivational affixes in The Land of Five Towers Novel by A. Fuadi. This research is descriptive qualitative research where researcher tries to find out the derivational affix and the roots from the words in The Land of Five Towers Novel without using statistical calculation. The result of analyzing data were gained the derivational affixes that found in The Land of Five Towers Novel by A. Fuadi are en-, in-, un-, a-, non-, re-, im- as prefixes, while the suffixes are –ly, -able, -er, -al, -ous, -ate, -cy, -y, -ee , –tion, -ion, -ize , -ship, -ment, -ism, -ist, -en, -ful, -age, -tic, -ish, -ary, -cent, -ive, -ance, -less, -ence, -ity, -ant, -or, -ness, -ure, -fy. In The Land of Five Towers Novel by A. Fuadi, the roots from the words that has been classified based on the part of speech are 199 (adjective), 188 (noun), 266 (verb). Thus, the writer suggests that to improve their mastery of vocabulary, the readers should be apply the derivational affixes by breaking the word into its elements that are root and affixes because one word can be built from more than one morpheme. By knowing the roots, the readers can build the word by easily themselves.
