Abstract

Fisheries resources that are open access allow overfishing to occur if not handled properly. To prevent this from happening, proper management and utilization of various types of marine resources is necessary. Information on fish distribution is one of the important things in an effort to find the best way in fisheries management. This paper tries to study the distribution of small pelagic fish in relation to oceanographic parameters that affect the movement of fish in the Makassar Strait using remote sensing satellite methods. This research was conducted in May-July 2021 in Makassar Strait waters. The data used in this study are point data and catches of small pelagic fish and oceanographic parameters from remote sensing satellite data. These data were then analyzed using GAM analysis. The results of this study indicate that oceanographic parameters have an influence on catches, in the SST range of 29.5°C – 30.5°C and CHL in the CHL range of 0.5 mg/m3 - 0.8 mg/m3 have a strong influence on the catch of small pelagic fish. The highest average catch was 44.4 kg of small pelagic fish in June.

Abstract

The use of flashing LED lights on squid fishing rods to catch squids is still used by fishermen without concerning the lunar phase due to a lack of knowledge about the influence of the lunar phase on the squid catch. This study was conducted to 1. determine the effect of the lunar phase on the catch of squid using fishing rods, 2. compare the number of catches obtained using blue and white LED flashing lights. This experimental study was conducted using a Randomized Block Design (RBD). Data regarding squid catches (per squid) using blue and white LED lights were collected in 4 lunar phases. Data were then analyzed using variance analysis (ANOVA). Results showed that the lunar phase significantly affected the squid catching using fishing rods at a significance level of 0.05 (5%). Catches were significantly different in the new moon, first quarter, full moon, and third quarter phases. A higher number of catches was obtained in the third quarter phase compared to other phases. ANOVA test indicated a strong significant effect of the use of LED on the catch at a significant level of 0.05 (5%). The use of flashing blue LED resulted in a higher number of squid catches than white LED since squids were more attracted by blue light than white light.

Abstract

Local wisdom is a cultural value that cannot be separated from the life of the Maluku people and acknowledged existence. Such as sasi is still a form of local wisdom used as a management guideline and coastal and marine resources management in Haruku villages. Local wisdom (sasi) is a knowledge of natural resource management based on customary systems that have been used for generations by the people of Haruku villages. This research aims to identify the factors that are the reasons for applying sasi in the coastal and marine resources management in Haruku villages. This research uses deep interview methods and structures through questionnaires to provide information about forms of management based on local wisdom. The application of sasi as a coastal and marine resource management system in Haruku villages because sasi has the function of monitoring, supervision, and law enforcement. So, the target for the sustainability of natural resources is maintained and impacts the economic improvement of the community.

Abstract

The potential of Barru Regency waters with a coastline of about 78 km is used by several groups of purse seine fishermen as a business opportunity to make formations for mackerel fishing activities. This study aims to predict the pattern of mackerel fishing season in Barru Waters, and to simply describe environmental conditions as an effective fishing management instrument. This study uses CPUE time series data (catch per unit effort) from the Marine Fisheries Service of Barru Regency in 2017-2020 and interviews with several purse seine fishermen in the last year of 2021. In addition, satellite imagery of sea surface temperature (SST), current velocity and chlorophyll-a were also used to describe environmental conditions during the peak fishing season for the study period June-August 2021. The CPUE moving average time series analysis was used to calculate the fishing season index (IMP). The results showed that the peak season for mackerel fishing occurred in the east season around Barru Waters, precisely in June with IMP of 166%. This condition corresponds to warm temperatures, and relatively high chlorophyll concentrations. Such conditions create potential fishing grounds along the study area. This information on mackerel fishing season is very helpful in improving the quality of management of small pelagic fisheries in Barru and surrounding waters.
