Abstract

AbstractThe purposes of this study are to identify the zonation of lahar-affected regions and thenumber of damaged houses due to lahar, as well as to make an economic valuation onsettlement building damage due to lahar in Kali Putih, Magelang Regency. The study was conducted by using a survey method based on physical and administrativezonations. The former was based on overflow width of lahar in Kali Putih after the Merapierruption in 2010, while the latter was based on subdistrict. Each of the zonation units wassampled. The sampling was carried out on the basis of settlement building vulnerability dueto lahar. The sample was represented by 59 respondents and three times of Focus GroupDiscussion (FGD) during the study. Results of the study show that, first, the overflow width of lahar in the location of study was1.785 km2. The widest overflow was in Sirahan Village, i.e. 0.813 km2 or 45.532 %, and thenarrowest one was in Blongkeng Village, Ngluwar Subdistrict, i.e. 0.001 km2 or 0.057%.Second, the number of houses affected by lahar was 1,290 houses. Settlement buildingdamage was dominantly due to collapse/washed away (814 houses), moderately damaged(200 houses), ligthly damaged (140 houses), severely damaged (71 houses), and relativelyundamaged (65 houses). A settlement mostly affected by the impact of lahar was SirahanVillage, Salam Subdistrict, i.e. 860 houses. Third, the largest lost resulted from the laharwas related to permanent houses, i.e. approximately IDR104,000,000.00 because theconstruction cost for the permanent houses was more expensive than that for semi-permanentand non-permanent ones.

Abstract

AbstractTidal flood is predicted to be more severe in the future because of sea level rise due toglobal warming. Purposes of the study are: 1) identify spatial distribution of tidal floodhazard in Pekalongan coastal area; 2) identify environmental impacts of tidal flood inPekalongan coastal area; and 3) formulate coastal management based on spatialdistribution analysis and tidal flood impacts in Pekalongan. Flood analysis in coastalarea was conducted by flood hazard mapping using GIS (Geographic Information System).Flood hazard mapping was developed by integrating GIS operation with DEM (DigitalElevation Model), level of inundation and iteration process. Tidal flood inundation scenariowas generated based on highest tides and sea level rise scenario by IPCC 2007, level ofinundation reached up to 135 mm. Results of this study showed that settlement and irrigatedpaddy fields are the widest inundated area by tidal flood. Tidal flood provides seriousenvironmental impacts such as infrastructure damage, agriculture and aquaculture landdamage, and soil and water pollution. Infrastructure damages include road, settlementsand sanitation.

Abstract

AbstractAfter the 2010 eruption of Mt. Merapi, ten million cubic meter of volcanic material ravagedsettlements, infrastructures, and agriculture areas where it located at downstream area of13 rivers. Lahar becomes threat for 1 million people who live on the flanks because it canflows along the rivers anytime. However, community is still standing in their hamlets andrefuses housing relocation plan that suggested by the government. This research aims toexplore community preparedness for lahar threat in Mt. Merapi flanks. Understanding thisinformation will help policy makers for disaster risk reduction that community empowermentis needed to cope with it. Research method applied with 244 questioners distribution tohousehold who live in four hamlets in Kali Putih riverside and lahar prone area. Analyticalmethod used statistic approach with descriptive analysis. Many households have preparedsome action in order to protect them from lahar despite they have lack of information howto face lahar. This study recommends capacity building forhousehold level and communitylevel by local government and NGOs in lahar prone area of Mount Merapi.

Abstract

AbstractLake Singkarak is one of natural resources and environmental which is important for human life. Itis located in West Sumatera Province, with area of 11220 km2 and 136 m depth. Until 2000, therewere no studies about the total economic value of lake Singkarak resource. That is the reasonwhy the researcher wants to conduct a research to estimate the use value and non-use valueof it. In order to quantify the value above, he used some approaches that based on theconcept of individual willingness to pay, by using the framework of the total economic value. The study shows that total economic value of natural resources and environmental of Singkaraklake is Rp. 174.950 billion per year. It consists of (a) the economic value of fishery Rp. 7,328billion, (b) the economic value of irrigation Rp. 0, 775 billion, (c) the economic value ofrecreation Rp. 4,176 billion, (d) the economic value of domestic use Rp. 7,718 billion, and (e)the the economic value of electricity power Rp. 154,992 billion. These findings are usefull forthe government as the policy maker to manage the development of lake Singkarak’s naturalresources and its environmental efectively and sustainability.

Abstract

AbstractThe use of PET packaging in drinking products has increased and shifted glass packaging,so it is necessary to study the life-cycle of PET packaging. This research aims to evaluate lifecycle of PET bottles on tea beverage products. This life-cycle assessment includes productionprocess, inventory, environmental impact, and cost analysis. The life cycle of PET bottle inIndonesia is not complete. The relationship between PET bottle manufacturers, drinkingmanufacturers, and recycling waste, are unidirectional. The recycled waste-PET used forother products. Based on the analysis of inventory, PET bottles 600ml is nedeed 28g resin/bottles and energy. The PET packaging production still produced a high defective product.Environmental impact assessment of PET bottle production indicates that the ambient airquality, noise and waste water are still good. The impact of PET bottle plant produce aglobal warming potential, reduce ozone layer and acid rain. The cost analysis describethat selling price of PET bottles is half the price of a glass bottle, while the price of waste-PET flake is three times higher than cullet. Although PET packaging is considered morepractical, cheap and saving, but the recycling of PET packaging has not been widelyutilized.
