Abstract

The effect of using various packaging treatments on extend the shelf life of strawberry fruit and their physico-chemical changes Strawberry is one among horticultural commodities that has a significant potential being developed commercially in Bali. Strawberry fruit commonly has a relatively sweet taste and a strikingly bright red color. Strawberry fruit is easily damaged and has a short shelf life, so it is necessary to inhibit the damage, among others by the use of various packaging treatments. This study aims to extend the shelf life of strawberry fruit and the effect of using various packaging treatments on their physico-chemical changes. The experimental design used was completely randomized design with one packing type factor consisting of 3 treatment levels, ie without packaging, use of mica package, and use of styrofoam package. The results showed that strawberry fruits treated with mica and styrofoam pacgages had a longer shelf life than strawberry fruit stored without any packaging (control). The storage period of strawberries both treated with mica and styrofoam packeges were last up to the 4th day. The use of mica package showed the best results with the lowest shrinkage value, lowest softness, low respiration rate and high organoleptic value. Eventhough strawberry fruit packed with styrofoam package showed a high vitamin C content, but the strawberry fruit packed with mica package has a better visual appearance with good fruit quality and mostly accepted by the panelist.

Abstract

The Effects of Processing Delays on Storage Ability of Soybean Seed (Glycine max L. Merril) Soybeans are the third important food crop in Indonesia after rice and maize. Proper handling or seed processing will affect the quality of the seeds obtained. Generally soybean seed can be stored for 3-4 months with the correct handling process. Delays in seed processing affect the appearance of seed quality both physical and physiological. Weather factors and facility limitations are the reasons for delaying seed processing after harvest. Soybean seed storage is important because soybean seeds are likely to be stored before the seeds are planted. This study aims to determine the effect of delayed processing that can be tolerated to store ability of soybean seeds. The experimental desain used was Completely Randomized Design (RAL) by a single factor with a processing delay which is consisting of five treatments and five repetitions. The observed variables were moisture content (%), germination (%), vigor saving test (%), growthability test (%), and electrical conductivity test (?mhos cm-1 g1).The results showed that delays of processing time after harvest in soybean seeds can effect the shelf life. The longer the processing time was delayed, the lower the storage ability of the seed. Seeds without delay in processing time can maintain seed viability for eight weeks of storage with the lowest electrical conductivity of 2,47 ? mhos cm-1 g1. Processing one day delays and two day delay after harvest can be tolerated because the seeds produced have a germination greater than 80% and still meet the standard of seed quality.

Abstract

Evaluation of Land Suitability for Robusta Coffee Plant (Coffea canephora) in Pajahan Village, Pupuan Sub-district, Tabanan Regency Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) is one of the agricultural commodities that have a profitable prospect. Pupuan sub-district is concentrated of Robusta coffee in Bali Province. Pajahan Village is one of the 14 villages located in Pupuan sub-district which also built Robusta coffee. Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) of Pupuan Sub-district, coffee production in Pajahan Village has continued to decline since 2012 until 2016. Evaluation of Land Suitability is a way to know the limiting factor in the research area. Land evaluation conducted by matching method between land characteristic / quality with growth requirement of plant evaluated. The research was conducted in Pajahan Village, Pupuan Subdistrict and Laboratory of Soil, Faculty of Agriculture - Udayana University. The research was conducted from October to December 2017. The results showed that the actual land suitability classes on the IILckK land unit is S3na2, IIILckK is S3na2.eh1 and IVLckK is Neh1. Fertilization, addition of organic matter, terracing and proper land cover can increase the class of land suitability to be appropriate marginal (S3) to very appropriate (S1). The limiting factor of dry season and moisture is a major limiting factor that can not be repaired.
