Abstract

The Mamoncak tradition as martial art performances is one of the classic Malay traditions in Indonesia that still exists today. The existence of the tradition is supported by many factors that need to be explored. Thus the purpose of this article is to find out the history and development of the Mamoncak tradition in Silo Lama Village, Silau Laut District, Asahan, Indonesia. The research method used is qualitative research with a historical approach. Data collection was carried out by interviews and exploration of relevant scientific references both from books and relevant journal articles. The results of the research show that the Mamoncak tradition was first carried out by Sheikh Abdurrahman Silau Laut, a migrant who came from Tanjung Tiram Batubara, North Sumatra. The Mamoncak tradition was used as a condition for the opening of the new village “Silau Laut” based on an agreement between Sheikh Abdurrahman Silau Laut and the supernatural beings so that the two creatures live in harmony. This tradition continued to be carried out and financed by the local community from 1901 AD until 1999 AD. In the year 2000 AD this tradition became more existent because the government through the Department of Education and Culture and the Ikatan Pencak Silat Indonesia (IPSI) took part in promoting and financing the tradition. Political-social factors are identified as factors in the development of the Mamoncak tradition. The Reform era became the starting point for the government to care about the development of the tradition. On the other hand, the old order transmigration policy made the Mamoncak tradition known by various tribes in Indonesia. Thus the Mamoncak tradition has become a gathering place between martial arts schools, both from among the Malay tribe community and other tribe communities in Indonesia.

Abstract

One of the motivations for women to work in the public sector is to increase family income. Usually, the husband's income is insufficient to meet family needs, so some women work in this sector. This study aimed to describe the Islamic views and conditions of working women in the Kita Muslim Fashion Convection, Way Serdang District, Mesuji Regency, Lampung Province, in helping to increase family income. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data sources consist of primary data from interviews and secondary data from research-supporting documents. At the same time, the data analysis model uses interaction analysis. Abstract

This article explored how to develop a Sufism-based community economy at the Al- Hanif Islamic Boarding School in Bandar Lampung City, Indonesia. The authors used qualitative field research with a descriptive analysis technique to describe economic development. The results of this study were one of the teachings highly emphasized in the Sufism-based Islamic boarding school conducted by Al-Hanif Lampung is the belief that religious perfection consists of three dimensions: Imān, Islām, and Iḥsān. Economic development in the Boarding School community empowerment process is carried out independently without assistance from the government through Bait al-Māl wa Tamwīl (BMT), drinking water companies, and schools. This Islamic Boarding School also applies the Islamic economic system in its business, such as the profit-sharing (muḍārabah) system, and prioritizes community empowerment to benefit the surrounding community. Moral Sufism values are implemented in the industrial economy, including the concepts of Ikhlāş ‘sincerely’, zuhd ‘asceticism’, takhalī (emptying the heart from despicable qualities), tahalī (filling the heart from commendable qualities), and tajalī (self-approach to Allah). The business aims to open up employment opportunities for the local community, which will later bring prosperity to the community; a profit-sharing system is also implemented in the trading system; whatever profits are obtained will be shared with the manager, and then the existing profits will be used for operations and activities that benefit the local community. Running an independent business will become a source of income for carrying out religious activities and become a job opportunity for the local community. Practicing the concept of Sufism in a modern ascetic manner is also hoped that it can foster spiritual values.

Abstract

In spite of numerous research reports demonstrating the relationship between locus of control (LOC) and academic self-efficacy (ASE) among Muslim students, studies on how faith-based LOC relates to ASE among Muslim students in Nigeria are scarce. This study employed a correlation survey to examine the relationship between faith-based LOC and ASE among Muslim students in Nigeria. The sample comprised university undergraduates (n=124) [71 females and 53males] aged between 18 and 35 years in the federal universities in South East, Nigeria. A purposive sampling procedure was used to get the sample for the study. The researchers adopted two instruments for this study: A 20 item structured Faith-based external LOC Scale (FBLCS) adapted from Rotter (1966). The second instrument is a five-item General Academic Self Efficacy Scale (GASES) adapted from Braun et al. (2021). The instrument was used in measuring students’ ASE. The data analysis in this study was done using version 29 of IBM SPSS.  The relationship between the study variables was established using regression analysis while linear regression (t-test) and Hayes’ PROCESS were used to analyze the hypotheses. Result shows that there is a significant positive relationship between faith-based LOC and ASE among Muslim students in Nigeria. Furthermore, result also shows that there is no significant influence of gender on the relationship between faith-based LOC and ASE among Muslim students in Nigeria. It was recommended that teachers and stakeholders in Islamic Education system should strive to incorporate the faith aspect of their LOC into their curriculum for optimal development.

Abstract

Almost all Madurese practice Nyabis culture with various statuses and social stratifications ranging from the lower to the upper classes; interestingly, their arrival is massive in a certain period and routine every month, twice a month, every week and even twice a day. This paper aimed to describe the Nyabis culture holistically. This paper used a phenomenologically qualitative method, with data collection methods of semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis uses the interactive model of Miles Huberman and Saldana. The results found that the culture of Nyabis continues to be maintained and carried out from the historical side of the famous sacred figures, pious and other advantages that occur from generation to generation; the next side is due to unusual, illogical, and mystical intermediaries. The irrational, mystical phenomenon and social reality of Nyabis cultural actors have succeeded in creating fanaticism within the community. This fanaticism stems from knowledge gained from social interactions in the form of conversations or stories that arouse curiosity and are then reinforced by concrete evidence of the perpetrators of this culture so that the Kiai continues and is increasingly believed to have advantages to solve various problems and needs of the community.

Abstract

This paper discussed the epistemology of Javanese interpretation, studying the thoughts of Raden Muhammad Adnan through Tafsir Al-Qur’an Suci Basa Jawi book. This tafsir book, published in the 20th century, has become an essential document in studying the science of the Qur'an and tafsir. This phenomenon is because the book was written by the first rector of the Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, Yogyakarta. The book was written in Javanese and lived in the New Order era, coupled with the involvement of power, which is why the authors study it further. Therefore, we need to know the background of the book's writing, the exegete's scientific genealogy and the book's methods and presentation to increase the local interpretation values. Thus, the authors used qualitative research methods and an interpretive epistemological approach. In the study of epistemology, seeking knowledge focuses on three aspects: the source of knowledge, the validity of the truth and the implications of the fact of the interpreter's knowledge. The transformation of science impacted the Basa Jawi interpretation book, which emphasizes local Javanese cultural and mystical approaches.

Abstract

Religious moderation has not had a special place in the hearts of Indonesian people since the government promulgated it. Many religious issues or conflicts are shown or occur in the homeland. Thus, a movement is needed to campaign intensely for religious moderation through the local wisdom embodied by local communities like the Gemohing tradition in the Lamaholot tribe. The study aimed to identify the tradition of Lamaholot as a local wisdom that can strengthen religious moderation in the village of Watanhura-Flores East. The method used in this study is ethnography with a qualitative approach, which was carried out in October-November 2023. This research data is known from observations and interviews with 12 sources from the village of Watanhura. The results that will be expected in this study are that the Gemohing Lamaholot tradition that is lived by the community of the East Watanhira-Flores can be a reference for uniting or strengthening religious moderation in the East in particular and in Indonesia in general. For that, the heirs of the cultural values of Lamaholot, in particular in the village of Watanhura, can make or preserve this local culture as local wisdom in building and strengthening religious moderation in living together amidst tribal, cultural, racial, and religious differences.
