Abstract

This paper explores the pivotal role of effective communication strategy as a veritable tool for deepening trade facilitation in contemporary global and national contexts. As countries strive to enhance cross-border trade efficiency, reduce transaction costs, and comply with international trade agreements such as the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement, strategic communication emerges as a critical enabler of reform implementation, stakeholder engagement, and institutional transparency. The paper is anchored on Shannon-Weaver Model of Communication, Two-Way Communication Model and Stakeholder Theory. The paper argues that an effective communication strategy serves as a vital catalyst in deepening trade facilitation by streamlining the flow of information among stakeholders, minimizing misunderstandings, and promoting compliance with trade regulations. Moreover, strategic communication enhances stakeholder engagement, promotes awareness of trade benefits, and facilitates the adoption of digital trade platforms, which are crucial for efficient cross-border transactions. The paper concludes that in today’s fast-evolving global trade environment, the strategic deployment of effective communication is not just a supportive function; it is a catalyst for transformation. Effective communication is the bridge between policy and practice. When used deliberately and strategically, it strengthens institutional credibility and deepens trade facilitation in ways that drive economic growth, enhance environmental sustainability, and bolster national energy security. The future of trade is green, digital, and fast, and the time to act is now

Abstract

Effective communication is central to the success of government policy implementation and regulatory enforcement, particularly in complex governance systems such as Nigeria. This paper explores the advances in government policy and regulatory communication from the perspective of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), a key agency responsible for trade facilitation and revenue generation, suppression of smuggling and implementation of government fiscal policies. Drawing on contemporary scholarly literature and practical case studies, the paper examines how the NCS has increasingly adopted strategic communication tools, such as digital platforms, stakeholder engagement, public awareness campaigns, and media framing, to improve transparency, facilitate compliance, and enhance institutional credibility. It highlights key initiatives, including the implementation of the Pre-Arrival Assessment Report (PAAR), the border closure policy, and the ongoing trade modernisation project, as evidence of the agency’s evolving communication practices. The paper also discusses the challenges that continue to undermine effective regulatory communication, including policy inconsistency, infrastructural constraints, misinformation, and limited professional communication capacity. The paper concludes that while significant progress has been made, sustained improvement in regulatory communication within the NCS requires institutional reforms, enhanced inter-agency coordination, and the professionalisation of communication functions to foster inclusive, accountable, and efficient public governance.

Abstract

This paper examines the role of social media in shaping political communication during the 2023 general election campaign in Nigeria. It investigates how political actors, parties, and citizen networks used digital platforms to disseminate messages, mobilise supporters, counter opposition narratives, and influence public opinion. Secondary data was used to generate relevant information on social media platform like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp, to identify communication patterns, strategies, and audience engagement behaviour. The paper argues that social media served as a critical arena for agenda-setting, political persuasion, real-time interaction, and participatory discourse, while also amplifying misinformation, emotional appeals, and polarising content. The paper concludes that social media significantly reshaped Nigeria’s 2023 campaign landscape by expanding political reach, enhancing youth participation, and redefining how political messages are produced, circulated, and contested. Nigerian political candidates have endeavoured to navigate the complex social media landscape. Initiatives such as fact-checking organisations and partnerships with digital influencers came as countermeasures to misinformation and targeted messaging.

Abstract

This study explores the role of strategic communication in Nigerian political campaigns, emphasizing the impact of new media and messaging strategies on electoral outcomes. This research aims to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive analysis of how strategic communication, facilitated by new media, influences political campaigns and electoral results in Nigeria. Two pertinent theories deployed for the study are the Agenda-Setting Theory and the Uses and Gratifications Theory. A questionnaire survey was administered to a diverse sample of Nigerian voters, yielding insights into demographic characteristics, primary sources of political information, and perceptions of strategic communication effectiveness. This study underscores the critical role of strategic communication in Nigerian political campaigns, particularly through digital platforms. The findings reveal that a well-educated and economically diverse electorate, predominantly middle-aged and self-employed, engages actively in political discourse. With social media emerging as the primary source of political information, platforms such as Instagram and Twitter have become pivotal in mobilizing and influencing voters, especially young adults. The study highlights that message consistency and clarity significantly impact voter behavior, reinforcing the effectiveness of emotional and issue-based messaging. It is recommended that political organizations and media houses should conduct digital literacy campaigns to help voters critically assess political information just as an increased interactivity on social media platforms can enhance direct engagement between political actors and the electorate. Policymakers should implement guidelines to curb misinformation and promote fact-based political communication. Social media platforms should collaborate with electoral bodies to prevent the spread of misleading political content.

Abstract

The 2023 Nigerian General Elections marked a significant turning point in the country’s democratic process, with social media emerging as a central platform for political communication, voter mobilization, and citizen engagement. This paper examines the role of social media in shaping electoral participation during the elections, focusing on how political actors employed digital platforms to disseminate campaign messages, influence public opinion, and mobilize voters. The study further explores the extent to which citizens utilized social media to access political information, participate in political discussions, and engage with electoral processes. The research adopted a qualitative approach based on secondary data analysis. Data were gathered from scholarly journal articles, election observation reports, policy documents, publications from electoral and civil society organizations, media reports, and existing studies on digital political communication and electoral participation in Nigeria. The paper contends that while social media enhanced political awareness and participation, it simultaneously created opportunities for the spread of misinformation, disinformation, political polarization, and digital manipulation that influenced electoral discourse. The paper discovered that social media played a critical role in increasing voter engagement, expanding political participation among previously marginalized groups, and strengthening issue-based political conversations during the election period. However, the effectiveness of these platforms in promoting democratic participation was constrained by challenges relating to information credibility, digital inequalities, and the proliferation of false narratives. The study concludes that social media has become an indispensable instrument of electoral mobilization and democratic engagement in Nigeria.

Abstract

The emergence of social media has transformed political communication and electoral campaigns across democratic societies, providing political actors and citizens with new avenues for information dissemination, engagement, and participation. Specifically, the study investigated the role of Twitter in political communication, assessed its impact on voter decision-making and electoral participation, and explored public perceptions of media coverage during the election period. Guided by the Agenda-Setting Theory, the study adopted a qualitative research approach utilizing secondary data. The paper argues that Twitter emerged as a major source of political information for many voters, providing real-time updates, campaign messages, and political discussions. The study found that exposure to political content on Twitter significantly influenced voters' awareness of candidates, perceptions of political issues, and electoral choices. Participants also acknowledged the platform's capacity to enhance political engagement and participation, although concerns were raised regarding misinformation, political bias, and the credibility of some online content. Furthermore, the findings indicated that social media played a more prominent role in informing voters than some traditional media outlets during the election period. The study concludes that Twitter has become a critical instrument of political communication and electoral mobilization in Nigeria's evolving democratic landscape. While the platform contributes to political awareness and citizen participation, there is a need for greater media literacy, ethical journalism, and effective regulation of misinformation to strengthen democratic processes.

Abstract

The increasing prominence of social media has transformed the production, circulation, and consumption of information during armed conflicts, with internet memes emerging as influential tools of digital communication and political expression. This study examines how internet memes framed the Gaza War across international digital spaces and explores the dominant narratives embedded within these visual and textual artifacts. Grounded in Framing Theory, the paper investigates the ways in which memes construct, reinforce, and contest interpretations of the conflict among global online audiences. The study adopts a qualitative comparative research design and relies on secondary data drawn from existing scholarly literature, reports, digital archives, and publicly available meme collections circulated on major social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit during key periods of the conflict. Through thematic and frame analysis, the study identifies recurring frames such as humanitarian crisis, resistance and liberation, victimhood, geopolitical contestation, media bias, and international solidarity. The findings reveal significant variations in meme narratives across different geopolitical and cultural contexts, reflecting divergent ideological positions and media environments. While some memes foreground civilian suffering and humanitarian concerns, others emphasize national security, political resistance, or criticism of international actors and mainstream media institutions. The study further demonstrates that memes function not merely as humorous content but as powerful communicative devices that simplify complex geopolitical issues, facilitate transnational engagement, and shape public perceptions of conflict. The research contributes to the growing body of literature on digital media, conflict communication, and participatory political discourse by highlighting the role of user-generated visual content in the framing of contemporary wars. It concludes that internet memes have become significant alternative mechanisms for international conflict coverage, influencing how audiences interpret events beyond traditional news media frameworks. The study recommends greater scholarly attention to meme culture as an emerging force in global political communication and digital conflict reporting.

Abstract

Media framing plays a significant role in shaping public understanding of socio-political issues by influencing how events, actors, policies, and national debates are selected, presented, and interpreted. In Nigeria, where the media operates within a complex socio-political environment characterised by ethnic, religious, economic, and ideological divisions, the framing of public discourse has important implications for citizens' perceptions and democratic engagement. This study examines the framing of socio-political discourse in Nigeria, with particular attention to how the media constructs and represents political and social issues in the public sphere. Anchored in Framing Theory, the study adopts a qualitative research approach based on secondary data. Data are drawn from existing scholarly literature, journal articles, books, media reports, policy documents, and other relevant published sources on media framing and socio-political discourse in Nigeria. The data are reviewed and thematically analysed to identify dominant framing patterns, recurring themes, and the broader implications of media representations for public understanding and democratic discourse. The study argues that media framing extends beyond the presentation of events to influence how audiences interpret political actors, governance, public policies, and societal challenges. It concludes that balanced, responsible, and context-sensitive media framing is essential for promoting informed public debate, democratic participation, social cohesion, and accountable governance in Nigeria.

Abstract

This paper examines digital crisis communication and organisational resilience in Nigeria, with particular attention to stakeholder engagement and reputation recovery. The rapid expansion of social media and digital communication platforms has transformed crisis management by increasing the speed, visibility, and interactivity of organisational crises. Using secondary data obtained from existing scholarly literature, published research, books, institutional reports, and documented cases of organisational crisis communication, the study critically analyses how Nigerian organisations respond to crises in digitally mediated environments. Guided by Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT), the study explores the relationship between crisis response strategies, stakeholder engagement, organisational reputation, and resilience. The analysis indicates that effective digital crisis communication is characterised by timeliness, transparency, accountability, empathy, consistency, and continuous stakeholder engagement. It further demonstrates that organisations that actively monitor digital conversations, provide accurate and timely information, acknowledge stakeholder concerns, and adopt response strategies that correspond with perceived crisis responsibility are better positioned to minimise reputational damage and recover stakeholder trust. Conversely, delayed responses, defensive communication, inconsistent messaging, and inadequate engagement may intensify misinformation, public backlash, and reputational decline. The study concludes that digital crisis communication should be integrated into organisational resilience frameworks and strategic public relations planning in Nigeria. It recommends the development of proactive digital crisis protocols, investment in digital listening and analytics capabilities, continuous stakeholder engagement, ethical and transparent communication, and post-crisis learning mechanisms to strengthen organisational resilience and support sustainable reputation recovery.

Abstract

The expansion of digital technologies, internet connectivity, and smartphone usage has significantly transformed the Nigerian newspaper industry, altering traditional patterns of news production, distribution, consumption, and audience engagement. The emergence of digital newspapers has created new opportunities for media organisations to reach wider audiences and deliver timely, interactive, and multimedia content, while simultaneously posing significant economic and operational challenges to conventional print media outfits. This study examines the impact of digital newspapers on print media organisations in Nigeria, with particular attention to changes in readership patterns, revenue generation, newsroom operations, production and distribution practices, and organisational sustainability. The study adopts a qualitative research approach and relies on secondary data obtained from relevant scholarly journal articles, books, published studies, industry reports, and other documentary sources relating to digital journalism and the Nigerian newspaper industry. The data were reviewed and thematically analysed to identify major trends and patterns associated with the digital transformation of print media. Anchored on the Diffusion of Innovations Theory, the study demonstrates that digital migration has encouraged Nigerian print media organisations to adopt online platforms, multimedia production, social media engagement, audience analytics, and alternative revenue models. However, the transition has also contributed to declining print readership, reduced advertising income, rising competitive pressures, and concerns about the long-term sustainability of traditional print operations. The study concludes that the survival and relevance of print media organisations in Nigeria increasingly depend on strategic digital transformation, innovative revenue diversification, technological adaptation, and the ability to maintain journalistic credibility while responding to changing audience expectations.
