Abstract

High feed costs are a major constraint in aquaculture, accounting for more than 60% of total production expenses. This challenge is experienced by BUMDes Hardjo Utomo in Sukoharjo Village, Wonosobo Regency, which still relies heavily on commercial fish feed, highlighting the need for more economical and sustainable feed alternatives. This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of local communities regarding the utilization of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae as a raw material for fish pellets to support feed self-sufficiency. The program was implemented through socialization, educational counseling, interactive discussions, demonstrations of maggot-based fish pellet production, and evaluation through interviews and final discussions. The materials covered the nutritional potential of BSF larvae, feed formulation, ingredient processing, pellet production, drying techniques, and feed quality standardization. The results showed that participants responded positively and demonstrated improved understanding of the potential of BSF larvae as an alternative protein source, fish pellet production techniques, and the importance of feed quality in supporting fish growth. Hands-on demonstrations proved more effective in enhancing participants' understanding than theoretical presentations alone. In addition, the program increased community awareness of the economic and environmental benefits of utilizing organic waste as a substrate for BSF cultivation. The management of BUMDes expressed interest in developing a maggot-based pellet production unit as part of strengthening village aquaculture enterprises. However, further assistance is still required, particularly in feed quality standardization, equipment operation, and business management. Overall, the program successfully strengthened community capacity to utilize local resources in supporting fish feed self-sufficiency, reducing dependence on commercial feed, and promoting sustainable rural economic development.
