Abstract

Particularly during the 5th week of gestation when primary tooth enamel begins forming. Disruptions during this crucial period can lead to suboptimal enamel structure, increasing susceptibility to cavities in toddlers. A study conducted observed dental examinations of 10 stunted toddlers, all of whom exhibited dental caries. This prompted an investigation into whether maternal nutrition during pregnancy correlates with primary tooth caries in stunted toddlers. The research, a retrospective case-control study using purposive sampling of 90 respondents, utilized maternal BMI data and assessed primary tooth caries incidence. Analysis using Spearman's non-parametric correlation test indicated a significant relationship (p=0.001, r=0.351) between maternal nutritional status and primary tooth caries. Findings from the Umbulsari Community Health Center revealed that most mothers had below-normal nutritional status during pregnancy, and stunted toddlers averaged 7.3 dental caries. It was concluded that there was a relationship between maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and primary tooth caries in stunted toddlers at the Umbulsari Community Health Center with a weak correlation coefficient and the direction of correlation between variables was negative or inversely proportional.

Abstract

Gingivitis is one of the most common oral health problems experienced by pregnant women, largely influenced by hormonal fluctuations that occur throughout gestation. These physiological changes increase gingival vascularity, reduce immune response, and heighten sensitivity to plaque accumulation, thereby placing pregnant women at higher risk of developing gingival inflammation. Preliminary data from the Kras Community Health Centre revealed an alarmingly high prevalence of gingivitis, indicating the need for further investigation. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between gestational age and gingivitis status among pregnant women at the Kras Community Health Centre, Kediri Regency. An analytical cross-sectional design was employed involving 75 pregnant women selected through simple random sampling. Gingivitis status was assessed using the Gingival Index, while gestational age was categorized into three trimesters. Data collection was conducted through direct clinical examinations using standardized observation sheets. Spearman’s Rank Correlation Test was used to analyze the association between the two variables. The results showed that most respondents were in the second trimester (45.3%), and the majority presented with moderate gingivitis (62.7%). Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between gestational age and gingivitis status (ρ = 0.000; α = 0.05), with a strong positive correlation coefficient (r = 0.746). These findings indicate that gingivitis severity tends to increase as pregnancy progresses. In conclusion, gestational age is significantly associated with gingival health status among pregnant women, highlighting the importance of integrating periodontal assessment and oral health education into routine antenatal services to prevent worsening gingival conditions and promote maternal well-being.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that can affect an individual's ability to maintain oral hygiene. This condition may lead to dental and oral health problems, such as gingivitis. An examination conducted in August 2024 on 30 patients with schizophrenia showed that 93% of them experienced gingivitis, indicating a high prevalence of gingivitis among patients with schizophrenia. This study aims to determine the relationship between oral hygiene and gingivitis in patients with schizophrenia at Karangkembang Regional Public Hospital, Lamongan Regency, in 2025. This research uses an analytical survey with a cross-sectional design involving 77 patients with schizophrenia. Data were collected through oral examinations to assess the patients’ oral hygiene and gingival condition. Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman rank correlation test to determine the relationship between oral hygiene and gingivitis in patients with schizophrenia, with a significance level (α) = 0.05. If the analysis result shows a ρ-value < 0.05, then H1 is accepted. If the ρ-value > 0.05, then H1 is rejected. The result of the Spearman rank test showed a ρ-value of 0.000. This value is smaller than the predetermined significance level (α = 0.05), thus H1 is accepted. This means there is a relationship between oral hygiene and gingivitis in patients with schizophrenia at Karangkembang Regional Public Hospital, Lamongan Regency, in 2025. The correlation coefficient (ρ) is 0.531, indicating a strong relationship between oral hygiene and gingivitis in patients with schizophrenia.
