Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of Indonesian in academic communication among students of the Economics Education Study Program at Gorontalo State University, identify emerging problems and their reasons, and examine their impact on message delivery and understanding of economic concepts. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive methodology. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations of classroom presentations and discussions, and documentation of digital academic communication in the form of WhatsApp conversations, Google Classroom interactions, and presentation transcripts. The study participants consisted of 10 students selected through purposive sampling in the second semester. The results indicate that the use of academic Indonesian is not optimal. Students still use colloquial language, slang, informal abbreviations, and foreign terms in both oral and digital academic communication. This situation is influenced by informal language habits, the influence of social media, low practice in academic communication, and limited exposure to scientific language. The impact is evident in the lack of clarity in conveying ideas and understanding of economic concepts. Therefore, consistent use of academic Indonesian is needed in the university environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of slang in relation to the understanding of formal economic terms among Economics Education students at Gorontalo State University. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, involving 11 second-semester students as informants selected using purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, followed by analysis using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The results of the study indicate that slang is more frequently used by students in daily communication and informal academic discussions because it is considered more relaxed and easier to understand. Students also simplify formal economic terms into everyday language, such as the term “inflation,” which is explained as “prices of all goods are rising” to make it easier to understand during discussions. The use of simple language helps students understand economic concepts in the early stages of learning, especially regarding economic terms that are rarely used in daily life. Nevertheless, the use of formal Indonesian is still considered important in presentations, writing assignments, and academic communication because it relates to the accuracy of formal economic terminology.

Abstract

Mathematical communication is an essential competence for prospective mathematics teachers because mathematical ideas must be expressed through clear, logical, and coherent language. This study describes students' perceptions of the contribution of the Indonesian Language course to written and oral mathematical communication. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected from active Mathematics Education students, Class of 2025, at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo through a hybrid questionnaire via Google Forms. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings show that effective sentences, paragraph organization, academic diction, and logical reasoning help students write problem-solving reports, construct mathematical arguments, and present mathematical ideas more coherently. The course therefore has a strategic role as a foundation for academic communication, although its materials need to be contextualized through mathematics-based scientific writing, presentation, and rhetorical practice.
