Abstract

Statistical literacy is a fundamental competency for Disaster Management students, as disaster-related decision-making relies heavily on the analysis of risk, vulnerability, capacity, and disaster impact data. However, various studies and learning experiences indicate that students still face difficulties in understanding applied statistical concepts and operating data analysis software such as the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). This community service activity aims to improve the statistical literacy of Disaster Management students through structured, practical, and disaster-contextualized SPSS training. The implementation method includes stages of needs analysis, training module design, hands-on practice–based training, and evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests. The results of the activity show a significant improvement in students’ understanding of basic statistical concepts, their ability to process and analyze disaster-related data using SPSS, as well as increased confidence in preparing data-driven scientific reports. This program is expected to contribute to improving the quality of human resources in the field of disaster management by promoting evidence-based decision making.

Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought significant changes to higher education, particularly in the way students access, process, and utilize digital information. One rapidly advancing AI technology is ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence–based language model capable of supporting learning processes, academic writing, basic data analysis, and problem solving. However, the use of ChatGPT among students still faces various challenges, such as low levels of critical digital literacy, the potential misuse of technology, and a lack of understanding of academic ethics. This community service activity aims to enhance students’ digital literacy through training on the critical, ethical, and productive use of AI-based ChatGPT. The implementation methods include needs analysis, development of training modules, hands-on practice–based training, and evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests. The results indicate a significant improvement in students’ understanding of AI concepts, their ability to use ChatGPT responsibly, and the enhancement of digital literacy skills in an academic context. This activity is expected to support the strengthening of student competencies in facing digital transformation in higher education.

Abstract

Financial literacy in Indonesia, particularly among Generation Z, remains low, with many students lacking an understanding of basic concepts such as budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt. At MAN 2 Kampar, this issue is exacerbated by limited access to relevant financial information and a lack of practical skills in financial management. This condition causes students to struggle in making sound financial decisions, which may negatively impact their future. To address this problem, the proposed solution is to implement a comprehensive financial education program, including budgeting simulations, investment games, and real-life case studies. This program aims to provide hands-on experience for students, strengthen their understanding of financial management, and improve financial literacy so they can better face future financial challenges.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance the English communication skills of students at SMKN Kesehatan dan Pariwisata Bangkinang through an English for Tourism training program based on a practice-based learning approach. The program was initiated in response to students’ limited practical communication abilities in hospitality contexts, resulting from the predominance of general English instruction that often lacks direct relevance to industry needs. The training employed a participatory approach consisting of needs assessment, contextual material development, interactive learning activities through role-play and service simulations, and comprehensive evaluation using pre-tests, post-tests, performance assessments, and observations. The participants were 56 eleventh-grade students from the Hospitality Study Program. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ English communication competence, as indicated by an increase in the average score from 58 in the pre-test to 78 in the post-test. Improvements were observed across various aspects of communication, including pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, grammar, and appropriateness of language use. Furthermore, students showed greater confidence, participation, and readiness to communicate in practical hospitality situations such as front office services, restaurant services, and tour guiding activities. The findings suggest that integrating English for Specific Purposes (ESP), particularly English for Tourism, with practice-based learning is effective in improving students’ communication skills and workplace readiness. Therefore, this training model can serve as a relevant and applicable strategy for strengthening vocational education, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sectors.
