Abstract

STEAM education is an innovation designed to address the challenges of the industrial revolution; as such, teachers utilize various media to support learning. This study aims to develop a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) learning model specifically designed to stimulate creative thinking skills in early childhood in Binjai City, North Sumatra. Creative thinking skills are essential 21st-century competencies that need to be stimulated from an early age; however, a significant gap between the need for creativity development and conventional learning approaches is still evident in various early childhood education institutions. The research method used is Research and Development (R&D) employing the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The research subjects were 60 children aged 4–6 years spread across four early childhood education institutions in Binjai City, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection instruments included observation sheets, interview guidelines, and a creative thinking assessment rubric. The results showed that the developed STEAM learning model met the criteria for validity (subject matter expert score of 87.5% and media expert score of 84.3%), practicality (teacher response score of 89.2%), and effectiveness in enhancing children’s creative thinking skills (gain score of 0.68, classified as moderate-high). There was a significant difference in children’s creative thinking abilities before and after the implementation of the model (t=8.47; p<0.001).

Abstract

The ability to read and memorize Hijaiyah letters is one of the fundamental skills that need to be developed in early childhood as a foundation for learning the Qur’an. However, based on preliminary observations, children's ability to read and memorize Hijaiyah letters had not developed optimally. This study aimed to improve the ability of early childhood learners to read and memorize Hijaiyah letters through the use of Hijaiyah Fun Card media. The study is expected to provide an innovative learning medium for teachers in enhancing children's religious literacy skills. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The participants were seven children aged 5–6 years in Group B. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and field notes. The findings revealed that the use of Hijaiyah Fun Card media improved children's ability to read and memorize Hijaiyah letters. In Cycle I, 57.14% of the children were categorized as Developing as Expected (MB), while 42.86% were categorized as Developing According to Expectations (BSH). After improvements were made in Cycle II, 57.14% of the children achieved the Very Well Developed (BSB) category, while 42.86% remained in the Developing as Expected (MB) category. The use of Hijaiyah Fun Card media was proven to increase children's learning interest, concentration, and ability to read and memorize Hijaiyah letters. Therefore, Hijaiyah Fun Card can be used as an effective alternative learning medium for teaching Hijaiyah letters in early childhood education.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve self-confidence in children aged 5 to 6 years using finger puppet media. This study employs the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method based on the model by Kemmis and McTaggart. The study consists of two cycles, each comprising four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Fifteen students from RA Al-Kautsar, aged five to six years, participated in this study. Data collection techniques included observation and documentation. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used in the data analysis. The findings indicate that children aged 5 to 6 years can benefit from the use of finger puppets to boost their self-confidence. Most children (34%) were classified as Not Yet Developed (NYD) in terms of self-confidence during the pre-cycle period. The average score increased to 63%, classified as Developing as Expected (DAE), following the intervention in the first cycle. The average percentage returned to the “Developing Very Well” (DVW) level of 92% in Cycle II. The children appeared more willing to perform in front of the class, were able to lead groups, and were more confident in expressing their opinions. Thus, finger puppets are an effective tool for fostering self-confidence in young children.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and empirically validate Acehnese local wisdom-based visual art worksheets to enhance creativity in children aged 4–6 years. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE model, the research was conducted at Taman Indria Kindergarten, Langsa City, involving 30 children, four teachers, and three expert validators. Data were collected through observations, interviews, validation sheets, creativity assessment rubrics, and documentation. The developed worksheets integrate elements of Acehnese culture such as traditional attire, vernacular architecture, local motifs, and cultural symbols into visual arts activities that include drawing, coloring, stamping, mosaic making, storytelling, and singing. Expert validation yielded very good criteria, averaging 95.6% (media: 95%, content: 98%, language: 94%). Implementation demonstrated positive responses, with operational feasibility reaching 98.1% (Very Feasible). Children's creativity scores improved significantly from pretest (M=59.3) to posttest (M=83.1), t(29)=12.457, p<0.001, with a moderate N-Gain of 0.59. The findings indicate that culturally contextualized visual art worksheets are feasible, practical, and effective in enhancing children's creativity across fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration dimensions, while simultaneously fostering cultural awareness in early childhood education.
