Abstract

Arabic morphology constitutes a fundamental branch of classical Arabic linguistics, focusing on morphological word transformation (tashrif) and derivational morphology. Despite more than a millennium of development, epistemological inquiry into ilmu sharaf — concerning its sources of knowledge, methods of rule formation, and scientific validity — remains considerably limited in contemporary academic literature, with existing studies tending toward normative and pedagogical orientations that neglect its fundamental philosophical dimensions. This article aims to examine the epistemology of ilmu sharaf from the philosophy of science perspective, tracing its historical genealogy from the early Islamic codification period through to modern Arabic linguistics, and analyzing its contributions to contemporary Arabic morphology. The research employed a qualitative library research method with historical, epistemological, and comparative-linguistic approaches, utilizing critical analysis of relevant primary and secondary sources. The findings reveal that ilmu sharaf possesses a robust epistemological foundation derived from the Qur'an, hadith, classical Arabic fushah poetry, and qiyas (analogical reasoning), and was developed through the methods of sima' (documentation), istinbath (inference), and ta'lil (rational justification) by linguists of the Bashrahn and Kufahn schools. Ontologically, its subject matter is morphological word transformation that produces semantic change; axiologically, it functions to preserve Arabic linguistic purity and facilitate Qur'anic comprehension. The contributions of ilmu sharaf to modern Arabic linguistics are demonstrably significant, particularly in the development of root-and-pattern morphology theory, derivational semantics, and Arabic natural language processing (NLP). These findings indicate that the classical sharaf tradition is not merely historically relevant but also carries important methodological implications for contemporary Arabic computational linguistics.

Abstract

Program pengabdian ini dilatar belakangi oleh kemampuan dan wawasan santri-santri di Pondok Pesantren Darul Hasanain, Grogolan, Umbulmartani, Ngemplak, Sleman, Yogyakarta terkait pemahaman dan implementasi ilmu akhlak yang masih awam, khususnya di kelas Ula. Penanaman akhlak harus dilakukan secara gradual dan konsisten. Banyak anak yang tahu perbuatan itu baik, tetapi masih sulit untuk melakukannya. Demikian juga sebaliknya, mereka sudah tahu perbuatan itu buruk, akan tetapi masih dilakukan dengan mengedepankan hawa nafsu. Dari fenomena itulah, pengabdi tertarik untuk mengadakan program pengabdian dengan memanfaatkan kitab Ala La Tanalul ‘Ilma illa bi Sittatin sebagai rujukan utama. Adapun metode pengabdian yang digunakan meliputi 2 tahap yaitu: Tahap Persiapan dan Tahap Pelaksanaan. Dalam tahap persiapan mencakup beberapa hal diantaranya: Persiapan proposal pengabdian, Persiapan bahan ajar, dan Persiapan sarana dan prasarana pelatihan. Adapun pada tahap pelaksanaan meliputi: Tahap pengenalan awal terkait program dan aturannya, Tahap Permulaan dalam pelatihan, Tahap evaluasi, dan Tahap pendampingan. Adapun hasil pengabdian dari program ini ialah adanya peningkatan kemampuan dan wawasan para santri pondok pesantren Darul Hasanain, dari nilai rata-rata yang dicapai sebelumnya yaitu 78,08 pada saat pre-test, lalu pada saat post-test nilai rata-rata mereka berubah menjadi 96,08. Harapan dari program ini ialah semoga akhlak para santri di ponpes tersebut semakin baik dan tetap mempertahankan akhlak yang baik sepanjang hayat.

Abstract

This community service programme was prompted by the situation faced by students at the Darul Hasanain Islamic Boarding School in Grogolan, Umbulmartani, Ngemplak, Sleman, Yogyakarta, regarding their limited understanding of ethics, particularly among those in the Ula class. The cultivation of ethical values must be carried out gradually and consistently. Most of them still find it difficult to read Arabic texts and interpret them using Javanese. It is this situation that prompted the volunteers to organise a community service programme, utilising the book “Al-Akhlak li Al-Banin Juz I” by Syekh Umar bin Ahmad Barja’ as the primary reference. The community service method employed comprises two stages: the Preparation Stage and the Implementation Stage. The preparation stage covers several aspects, including: preparation of the community service proposal, preparation of materials, and preparation of training facilities and infrastructure. The implementation stage comprises: an initial introduction to the programme and its rules, the commencement of training, the evaluation stage, and the mentoring stage. The findings indicate that the training on the book “Al-Akhlāq li al-Banīn” Volume I for the students at the Darul Hasanain Islamic boarding school has successfully made a significant contribution to enhancing the students’ skills and knowledge regarding the ethics covered in the book. This is evidenced by the students’ pre-test scores, which initially averaged 67,16; following the post-test, their average score rose to 95,75. Another improvement relates to their behaviour and conduct, which have shown a marked improvement following the delivery of this community service programme.
