Abstract

This research examines Lontar Eka Prathama as a Balinese Hindu religious text that constructs spirituality through the integrated relation among human beings, nature, and God. The study responds to the tendency to read lontar-based ritual knowledge mainly as technical instructions for ceremony, while its theological, ethical, and spiritual meanings are often left implicit. The objective is to explain the structure of human-nature-God relations, analyze the construction of spiritual knowledge through symbols and rituals, and interpret the ethical-spiritual relevance of the text for Hindu life in the era of globalization. This research uses a descriptive qualitative design with textual study and hermeneutic approach. Primary data are taken from the Indonesian translation of Lontar Eka Prathama, while secondary data are obtained from scholarly works on Hindu theology, symbolism, ritual, and hermeneutics. Data were collected through close reading, textual documentation, classification of key passages, and thematic coding. The analysis was conducted through structural-symbolic interpretation, hermeneutic distanciation, appropriation, and synthesis. The findings show that Lontar Eka Prathama places human life within a sacred process guided by Sanghyang Jagatnāta, integrates natural elements into ritual order, and constructs spiritual knowledge through tirtha, panglukatan, banten, mantra, and life-cycle rites. The text also offers ethical discipline, moral self-control, ecological awareness, and spiritual resilience by linking ritual accuracy with inner purification and cosmic responsibility. The article concludes that Lontar Eka Prathama remains relevant as a constructive source of Balinese Hindu wisdom for contemporary religious life.

Abstract

The development of modernity has not only transformed patterns of social life, but has also given rise to increasingly personal forms of reflective spirituality, one of which is tarot practice. In the context of Hindu communities in Buleleng District, this practice is significant because it emerges within a strong local religious system and gives rise to processes of acceptance, restriction, and reinterpretation. This study aims to analyze the meaning of tarot as a medium of self-reflection and to explain how that meaning is negotiated within the religious life of Hindu communities. This study employs a qualitative approach with a social phenomenology perspective. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving nine informants, and were then analyzed thematically and interpretatively. The findings show that tarot is not understood as a substitute for religion nor as a source of absolute spiritual authority, but rather as a reflective medium for understanding inner conditions, life experiences, and considerations in decision-making. Acceptance of tarot occurs selectively through the negotiation of meaning between individuals’ subjective experiences, religious normative boundaries, and the social legitimacy operating within the community. These findings affirm that contemporary Hindu religiosity is adaptive toward new reflective practices as long as they do not displace religion as the primary framework of spiritual life.

Abstract

This research examines the sacred legitimacy of dalang in the Sapuh Leger purification ritual at Pura Siwa Manik Dalang, Buleleng, Bali. The study departs from the distinctive position of dalang in Balinese Hindu ritual practice, not merely as a performing artist but as a sacred mediator whose authority determines the validity of purification. This research aims to analyze the foundations of sacred legitimacy, the ritual relationship between Dalang Pengempon Pura and dalang ngayah, and its implications for the continuity of Sapuh Leger. Using a qualitative descriptive-narrative method with religious and cultural approaches, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, textual study, and documentation involving dalang, temple caretakers, religious figures, and ritual participants. The findings show that sacred legitimacy is constructed through lineage, mastery of ritual knowledge, competence in mantras and sacred texts, socio-religious recognition, and institutional involvement in the temple structure. The relationship between Dalang Pengempon Pura and dalang ngayah reflects a structured ritual authority based on hierarchy, devotion, and collective responsibility. Theoretically, this study contributes to the understanding of sacred authority as a form of legitimacy that is socially and ritually reproduced. Culturally, it affirms the role of dalang in preserving ritual knowledge, maintaining the validity of Sapuh Leger, and sustaining Balinese Hindu religious identity.
