Abstract

Urban agriculture has been increasingly developed in response to the growing conversion of agricultural land into non-agricultural areas in urban regions. However, urban agriculture activities still face several challenges, particularly practical, efficient, and environmentally friendly fertilization practices. Pupukin! is an innovative, multifunctional slow-release organic fertilizer developed by utilizing organic waste materials such as banana corms, shrimp shells, and neem leaves as the main raw materials. This study aims to analyze the business model and financial feasibility of Pupukin! fertilizer business in supporting urban agriculture activities. The study employed a quantitative approach using the Business Model Canvas (BMC) to describe the business structure, as well as financial feasibility analysis, including production cost calculation, profit analysis, Revenue Cost Ratio (R/C Ratio), Payback Period (PP), and Return on Investment (ROI). The results indicate that the Pupukin! business model offers a key value proposition in multifunctional organic fertilizer that is practical, environmentally friendly, and efficient to use, making it suitable for urban agriculture practitioners. Financial analysis shows that the Pupukin! business is economically feasible, indicated by an R/C Ratio of 1.48. Furthermore, the business demonstrates a favorable investment return with an ROI of 48% and a relatively short Payback Period. These findings suggest that the Pupukin! fertilizer business has strong potential to be further developed as a sustainable agricultural innovation that supports the advancement of urban agriculture.

Abstract

Abstract

Pupukin! is an innovative slow-release organic fertilizer product with multifunctional 3-in-1 benefits (biofertilizer, biopesticide, biostimulant). This product was developed in response to challenges faced by urban farming practitioners, namely time constraints (time poverty) and reliance on inorganic fertilizers. While innovative products such as Pupukin! offer practical solutions, an appropriate development strategy is required to achieve commercial success. This study aims to analyze the product development strategy of Pupukin! using the New Product Development (NPD) approach and evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented NPD process based on consumer responses. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the development team and consumers, observations, and document analysis. The results indicate that the implementation of NPD in Pupukin! followed systematic stages from idea generation to market testing. Strategic evaluation revealed successful product differentiation based on market needs. However, weaknesses were identified in concept validation and packaging design, which hindered effective communication of the product's value. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of integrating ongoing consumer validation at every stage of NPD to enhance the competitiveness of innovative organic fertilizer products.

Abstract

Pupukin! is an innovative eco-friendly fertilizer developed as a practical solution for urban farming activities. This study aims to describe the business performance and to map the business model of Pupukin! using the Lean Canvas approach. A case study method was employed, with data analyzed based on the nine elements of the Lean Canvas. The results show that Pupukin! adopts a slow-release fertilizer concept using banana pseudostem base and the waste of shrimp shell as row materials, formulated as a multifunctional fertilizer capable of supplying plant nutrients, stimulating growth, and protecting plants from pests and diseases for up to 90 days with a single application. Pupukin!’s business activities cover pre-production, production, and post-production stages, supported by laboratory research, limited field trials, and initial-scale marketing. Pricing is determined based on production costs and the purchasing power of urban consumers, with marketing strategis that utilize social media, online marketplaces, and direct selling. The Lean Canvas mapping indicates that Pupukin! targets urban and peri-urban consumers with environmentally friendly lifestyles and limited time for plant maintenance. Marketing activities are supported by online and offline distribution channles, with the main revenue streams derived from direct product sales and sales through partners, while the cost structure remains manageable with an initial capital of IDR 10,100,000. Market validation through sales performance, repeat purchases, and cosumer feedback demonstrates that Pupukin! is well accepted by the target market. Therefore, Pupukin! has the potential to be further developed as an innovative agribusiness vemture that is relevant and sustainable for the advance of urban farming.
