Abstract

This study examines the integration of socio-constructivist principles and digital literacy in English speaking instruction within higher education in North Sumatera, Indonesia. Despite growing emphasis on communicative competence, students continue to face challenges in oral proficiency, confidence, and access to authentic interaction, highlighting a gap in the effective integration of pedagogy and technology. This research aims to design, implement, and evaluate digitally supported instructional practices that enhance speaking competence through collaborative learning environments. A convergent mixed-methods design was employed, involving 120 English education students and 12 lecturers from three universities. Data were collected through questionnaires, classroom observations, speaking performance assessments, and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using complementary statistical and thematic techniques. The findings indicate that digital storytelling, podcast-based tasks, and collaborative multimedia projects substantially improve learners’ fluency, motivation, and self-efficacy. These outcomes reflect core socio-constructivist principles, particularly interaction, scaffolding, and learner autonomy. While lecturers demonstrated increasing digital pedagogical competence, challenges related to infrastructure and professional training remain evident. This study concludes that the integration of socio-constructivist approaches within digitally enriched learning environments promotes more communicative, multimodal, and culturally responsive speaking instruction. The proposed framework offers a sustainable model for advancing technology-integrated English language teaching in similar higher education contexts.

Abstract

Kawasan ekowisata Bukit Lawang di Kabupaten Langkat menghadapi tantangan berupa penurunan mutu lingkungan publik akibat rendahnya kepedulian sebagian masyarakat lokal dan wisatawan dalam mengelola sampah kemasan plastik. Kondisi tersebut berpotensi mengancam kelestarian habitat satwa liar sehingga diperlukan upaya penanaman nilai karakter peduli lingkungan secara persuasif. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan menginternalisasi nilai karakter sadar lingkungan pada masyarakat dan wisatawan melalui gerakan kampanye sosial. Kegiatan menggunakan desain quasi-experimental dengan pendekatan one-group pretest-posttest dan melibatkan 48 orang peserta yang terdiri atas masyarakat setempat dan wisatawan. Pelaksanaan kegiatan dilakukan melalui kampanye simpatik tatap muka dengan memanfaatkan media peraga berupa paket poster edukasi lingkungan dan papan pajangan interaktif yang dikembangkan oleh mahasiswa. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan kuesioner sikap afektif berbasis skala Likert sebelum dan sesudah kampanye, lembar observasi perilaku, serta wawancara reflektif. Data kuantitatif dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif, sedangkan data kualitatif dianalisis secara deskriptif melalui hasil observasi dan wawancara. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan kepedulian peserta yang sangat signifikan dengan rata-rata capaian perilaku sebesar 80,5%. Peningkatan tertinggi terjadi pada indikator pengurangan penggunaan plastik sekali pakai sebesar 114,2% dan indikator kesadaran menjaga kebersihan ruang publik sebesar 75,0%. Kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa kampanye simpatik berbasis media visual dwibahasa efektif meningkatkan kepedulian lingkungan, memperkuat komunikasi dengan wisatawan mancanegara, serta mendorong terbentuknya kebiasaan kolektif yang mendukung keberlanjutan ekowisata di Bukit Lawang.
