Abstract

The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) currently faces a severe motivational crisis due to its reliance on pragmatic-secular frameworks devoid of spiritual grounding. Concurrently, Islamic environmental discourse remains polarized between rigid legalism and passive mysticism. Addressing this gap, this study aims to formulate an Islamic Educational Philosophy by excavating the ecological dimension of the Indonesian pesantren tradition through an Iqbalian panentheistic lens. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics, the research explores a “lived ontology” to achieve a fusion of horizons between historical pesantren pedagogy and contemporary SDG urgencies. The findings reveal a dynamic dialectic of “contextualized panentheism.” This paradigm transitions from a mystical fusion with nature into a proactive ethical stance, embodied by the awakened Iqbal’s concept of khudi as a responsible khalīfah. By perceiving nature as a living divine mirror (tajallī), this pedagogy systematically dismantles the alienated, exploitative Cartesian ego. Empirically, this educational praxis manifests in successful community-driven conservation models—such as the eco-pesantren and customary maritime laws—which consistently outperform secular technocratic policies by internalizing ecological care as a binding moral obligation. The study concludes that pesantren pedagogy provides an authentic, internally driven motivational grammar, ultimately transforming environmental stewardship from an external regulatory duty into a sacred existential expression.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the ITMARIS student organization (Ittihadut Thullab Ma’had Riyadlus Sholihin) in strengthening character education among students at Riyadlus Sholihin Islamic Boarding School in Probolinggo City. The study is grounded in the need for character development that is not merely normative but also applicative and participatory. ITMARIS serves as a platform for the actualization of character values through students’ direct involvement in structured organizational activities. This research employed a qualitative case study approach, with ITMARIS as the unit of analysis. Data were collected through interviews with organization administrators, students, caregivers, and supervisors, participatory observation, and document analysis. Data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation, while data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and inductive conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that ITMARIS effectively instills values of responsibility, leadership, independence, discipline, and cooperation among students. Organizational involvement also enhances students’ self-confidence, communication skills, and social relationships. The success of character development is supported by the humanistic and dialogical approach of the supervisors. Despite challenges related to student motivation and limited facilities, ITMARIS sustains its programs through continuous evaluation and innovation, thereby contributing as a contextual and holistic model for character education in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric mapping and analysis of global research trends in Islamic Higher Education (IHE), drawing upon 1,400 Scopus-indexed publications from 1970 to 2024. Employing advanced bibliometric techniques such as co-authorship, co-citation, and co-word analyses using VOSviewer and Bibliometrix R-package, this research systematically explores publication dynamics, intellectual structures, and emerging thematic directions within the field. The findings reveal a sustained annual growth rate of 10.62%, with a sharp increase since the mid-2000s, indicating a global rise in scholarly interest in IHE as both a religious and socio-academic domain. Southeast Asia particularly Indonesia and Malaysia dominates research output, while international collaboration remains limited. Thematic network visualisations indicate two principal clusters: (1) educational and religious studies, centred on topics such as higher education, Islamic education, and religious moderation; and (2) health and human studies, emphasizing gender, adult learning, and empirical methodologies. The thematic evolution map positions “human,” “female,” and “adult” as motor themes, suggesting growing interdisciplinarity linking Islamic pedagogy with psychology, digital learning, and health education. Conversely, “Islamic higher education” and “Islamic education” appear as emerging or underdeveloped themes, reflecting both conceptual immaturity and potential for future expansion

Abstract

In the last decade, Islamic pedagogy has experienced significant growth as an academic field integrating spiritual, ethical, and digital dimensions. This study aims to examine the evolution, structure, and research front of Islamic pedagogy studies through a scientometric and co-citation analysis using Scopus-indexed data from 2012–2025. Employing the PRISMA 2020 protocol, data were systematically collected and analyzed with Bibliometrix (R) and VOSviewer to map publication trends, author collaboration networks, and thematic structures. The findings reveal an accelerating trend of publications after 2020, with Malaysia, Iran, and the United States as leading contributors. Thematic mapping identifies four major research clusters Islam evolution science, theology education, digital religion, and interfaith epistemology representing a paradigm shift toward integrative and transdisciplinary Islamic knowledge. The study highlights the growing role of digitalization, social constructionism, and ethical frameworks in shaping modern Islamic education. Novelty emerges in redefining the Islamization of knowledge through data-driven and empirical approaches that merge classical epistemology with contemporary science and technology. This research contributes methodologically by applying scientometric tools to Islamic studies, and conceptually by proposing a new transdisciplinary Islamic epistemology that bridges theology, ethics, and digital learning. The study serves as a foundation for evidence-based policy and future directions in global Islamic education research.

Abstract

Islamic education plays a crucial role in fostering peace, tolerance, and global social harmony. In response to growing issues of intolerance and extremism, this study aims to analyze the landscape of research on the role of Islamic education in promoting peace and tolerance through a bibliometric approach. Using data from Scopus and Web of Science from 2019–2024, this research applies PRISMA 2020 protocol and utilizes VOSviewer and Bibliometrix software to identify trends, influential authors, collaboration networks, and conceptual structures within the field. The study found a significant increase in publications after 2015, with Indonesia and Malaysia emerging as leading contributors. Thematic mapping revealed four dominant clusters: religion–Islam–education, cultural anthropology–history, human–students, and engineering education–Islamic values. The findings highlight the integration of spirituality, humanism, and science as a new epistemic paradigm known as Critical Islamic Pedagogy. This paradigm bridges Islamic epistemology (ta’dib) and critical pedagogy (conscientization), positioning Islamic education as both a spiritual and social transformation tool. The novelty of this study lies in its quantitative bibliometric mapping that visualizes the global scientific network in Islamic education and peace studies, offering a data-driven foundation for future research directions. Practically, the findings contribute to developing inclusive Islamic curricula, strengthening interfaith collaboration, and enhancing Indonesia’s academic diplomacy in Islamic peace education.
