Abstract

Abstract

Cement is a type of filler commonly used in hot asphalt mixtures, necessitating innovation in materials that can replace cement at a more economical price. Suitable materials include silica fume, which contains a very high compound of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) exceeding 90%, and limestone powder. The use of industrial waste such as silica fume and limestone powder is expected to improve the Marshall characteristics (stability, flow, VIM, VMA, VFB, and Marshall quotient) of the AC-WC asphalt mixture, with filler percentages used at 1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, and 9% of the total mixture. Additionally, the use of industrial waste aims to reduce environmental waste. In this research, the method employed is the Marshall test to obtain the optimum asphalt content. From the test results on AC-WC using local materials with variations of the two filler types—silica fume and limestone ash powder—there is one mixture that meets the requirements of the General Specifications of Bina Marga 2018 Revision 2 for Marshall characteristics, namely the use of 9% filler with 6.4% asphalt variation, yielding values of Density 2.275, Stability 1610 kg, Flow 4.00 mm, Marshall Quotient 402.44 kg/mm, VIM 3.02%, VMA 15.86%, and VFB 80.98%.

Abstract

This study investigates the utilization of industrial waste in the form of silica fume as a filler to enhance the Marshall characteristics of porous asphalt mixtures. Filler contents of 0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7% were tested using the Marshall method, which included VIM (%), Stability (kg), Flow, and Marshall Quotient. Experimental results using local materials with silica fume and lime powder fillers showed that one mixture met the 2018 Bina Marga General Specifications (Revision 2). The optimum performance was achieved with 1% filler and 5.5% asphalt content, yielding a density of 2.226, stability of 870 kg, flow of 2.83 mm, Marshall Quotient of 307.11 kg/mm, and VIM of 12.90%.
