Abstract

This study departs from a recurring problem faced by Indonesian language teachers in seventh grade at SMPN 7 Kota Serang: many students struggle to grasp word meaning, which in turn makes it difficult for them to identify characters, plot, and setting in narrative texts. In response, this research examines the forms of lexical meaning found in the dialogue of four main characters in the 2019 series Keluarga Cemara, drawing on Geoffrey Leech's notion of conceptual meaning, and tests its use as teaching material for narrative text. Using a qualitative descriptive design with a semantic approach, data were collected through observation, note-taking, and documentation, then checked through triangulation and validated by three language experts, yielding 29 data deemed suitable for analysis. The findings reveal five sense relations, namely synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, hyponymy, and meronymy, with synonymy occurring most frequently. Each relation serves a distinct function, from enriching word choice to sharpening conflict between characters and clarifying setting and objects within the story. Following classroom implementation, a student questionnaire showed an average positive response rate of 92 percent, with the highest scores on ease of story comprehension and active participation. These results suggest that Keluarga Cemara Serial 2019 is a viable contextual medium for teaching word meaning alongside the building blocks of narrative text at the junior high school level.
