Abstract

The issue of household food security in urban areas is a major concern, especially given limited land availability and the growing need for nutritious food. The Sepang Jaya neighborhood faces similar challenges, necessitating innovative solutions that are easy for the community to implement. This community service project focuses on implementing fish farming in buckets (budikdamber) as a strategy to improve household food security by utilizing limited space. The objective of this project is to enhance the community’s knowledge, skills, and self-reliance in independently producing animal and plant-based protein sources through the budikdamber system. The methods employed included a participatory approach involving the delivery of educational materials on the concepts, benefits, advantages, and techniques of budikdamber, as well as hands-on training in preparing the aquaculture medium and caring for the fish. Implementation strategies utilized interactive sessions, discussions, live demonstrations, and on-site guidance. The results of the activity demonstrated an increase in the community’s understanding of budikdamber techniques, as well as a growing interest in implementing this system in their own homes. Community members were able to assemble the aquaculture media independently and understand the process from maintenance through harvest. Overall, this activity contributed to strengthening household food security by providing a sustainable source of nutritious food, while also promoting community empowerment based on local potential.
