Abstract

Studies of tahfiz al-Qur’an—the structured process of memorizing the Qur’an and maintaining that memorization under a teacher’s guidance—have generally focused on its methods and historical transmission, while paying limited attention to the tradition as a dynamic Living Qur’an ecosystem. This qualitative phenomenological study employs an interpretive-anthropological approach to examine the tahfiz tradition at four pesantren in Sampang and Pamekasan Regencies. Data were collected from July 2024 to June 2025 through in-depth interviews with pesantren leaders, tahfiz instructors, students, alums, and parents or guardians, as well as through participant observation and document analysis. The findings reveal three patterns. First, the pesantren in Sampang and Pamekasan are part of one of the oldest tahfiz sanad networks in the Indonesian archipelago and have begun integrating tahfiz with formal education. However, some students’ limited proficiency in basic Qur’anic recitation remains a challenge. Second, alums’s ability to maintain their memorization declines because of limited opportunities for muraja‘ah and the demands of work and family life; communal semaan serves as a principal means of sustaining memorization. Third, an emerging reorientation is evident from quantitative, textual memorization (ḥifẓ al-lafẓ) toward internalized understanding (ḥifẓ al-qalb) and the embodiment of Qur’anic values (ḥifẓ al-fi‘l). The study concludes that strong public enthusiasm for tahfiz in Madura must be matched by the systematic integration of memorization, understanding of Qur’anic teachings, life skills, and a supportive ecosystem for long-term retention.
