Abstract

The utilization of waste materials as alternative components in pavement construction is continuously being developed to support sustainable development. This study examines the use of Rice Husk Ash (RHA) and Crumb Rubber (CR) as substitute materials in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) specifically for Asphalt Concrete-Wearing Course (AC-WC). The research investigates the chemical characteristics of these materials through X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) testing and evaluates their impact on mixture performance based on Marshall parameters. The methodology involved material characterization, the design of Marshall samples with asphalt content variations ranging from 5% to 7%, and Marshall testing on both control samples and modified samples containing a 50% RHA and 50% CR filler substitution. XRF analysis revealed that RHA is predominantly composed of Silica (SiO2) at 91.5%, while CR contains 51% Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and 17% Sulfur (SO3). Marshall test results indicate that the high silica content in RHA contributes significantly to increasing mixture stability beyond 1400 kg, though it also leads to higher Voids in Mix (VIM). Conversely, the inclusion of CR enhances flexibility and flow values but reduces overall stability due to the elastic properties of sulfur and zinc oxide, which limit the internal bonding of the mixture. This study concludes that the mechanical characteristics of asphalt mixtures are heavily influenced by the chemical interactions of their constituent oxides, where RHA serves as a structural stiffener and CR acts as an elasticity modifier.

Abstract

Roads, as an essential part of the national transportation system, play a very vital role, especially in supporting economic, social, cultural, and environmental aspects. In road maintenance planning, it is necessary to have a well-organized and systematic road handling program. One of the steps in planning new roads is to determine the pavement thickness. The aim of this research is to determine the pavement thickness of roads in Muara Ikan Village - Talang Ali, PALI Regency, using the 2017 Manual for Pavement Design (MDP) method. By utilizing various methods and approaches related to traffic volume, vehicle types, subgrade soil types, and planning duration, pavement thickness calculations can be performed. The research method includes surveys of the geometric conditions of the road, daily traffic volume, and surrounding topography. The data obtained are further analyzed using the pavement design guidelines from 2017. The results indicate that the rigid pavement design based on the 2017 MDP method uses concrete pavement with a compressive strength of Fs’ 45 MPa and a thickness of 27.5 cm, an aggregate base layer of Class A with a thickness of 15 cm, and soil improvement using selective backfill with a thickness of 30 cm.

Abstract

The Community-Based Sanitation Program (SANIMAS) is a component of the Urban Sanitation and Rural Infrastructure (USRI) program that aims to create and improve the quality of life of the community, both individually and in groups, especially low-income communities in densely populated, slum and sanitation-prone urban areas. This study focuses on calculating the capacity and calculating the budget for the construction of a communal septic tank (RAB). The research location is in Sungai Baung Village, Talang Ubi District, PALI Regency. The design of the Communal Septic Tank (IPAL) building with an emptying time of 2 years. The population increase of 1.6% in 5 years resulted in a total of 355 communal septic tank users P (2020). From the calculation results, it was obtained that the IPAL built had a tank volume of 61 m3/day with a waste volume of 28.4 m3/day where the required sludge tank capacity was 28.5 m3 with a minimum capacity requirement in one day of 1,434 liters/person/day and a water capacity requirement of 5.1 m3.
