Abstract

This research aims to identify the improvement of students' speaking ability through the implementation of the Storytelling Method among eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Padangsidimpuan. The study employed a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, involving a purposive sample of seven students from class XI-8 who underwent a multi-stage screening process including placement tests and interviews. Quantitative data were collected using pre-test and post-test speaking assessments, while qualitative insights were obtained via semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using the Paired Samples T-Test for numerical scores and Thematic Analysis for interview transcripts. The findings revealed a statistically significant enhancement in oral proficiency; the mean score rose from 62.28 in the pre-test to 77.71 in the post-test, reflecting an average gain of 15.43 points and a percentage increase of 24.77%. Qualitative analysis indicated that the storytelling approach successfully mitigated psychological barriers such as anxiety and low confidence. Consequently, the research concludes that the Storytelling Method is a highly effective pedagogical tool for improving students' speaking skills.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the specific types and frequency of linguistic errors found in the descriptive writing of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Padangsidimpuan. Utilizing a Sequential Explanatory mixed-methods design, the study combined quantitative data mapping with qualitative in-depth analysis. The sample consisted of 33 students chosen via purposive sampling. Data collection involved a descriptive writing test and a Likert-scale questionnaire. Analysis revealed 284 total errors across five distinct categories: capitalization, spelling, punctuation, part of speech, and sentence structure. Capitalization errors were the most prevalent at 61.38%, followed by spelling (22.77%), comma errors (8.91%), and full stop errors (6.93%). While sentence structure errors were relatively infrequent (12.37%), the overall mean score from the questionnaire was 3.29, suggesting that students find using parts of speech moderately challenging. The study concludes that the primary hurdles for students are mechanical conventions rather than core grammatical rules. Consequently, the researcher suggests that English teachers should focus more on revising and editing phases during the writing process to improve accuracy.

Abstract

This research aimed to improve the procedural text writing ability of Grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 8 Padangsidimpuan through the use of picture media. The study was prompted by the students' low proficiency in writing, particularly in composing procedural texts. To address this issue, a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method was employed over two cycles. The subjects of this research were 20 Grade VIII students. Data was collected through writing tests administered in the pre-cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II stages. The results showed a significant improvement after the implementation of picture media. In the pre-cycle stage, only one student (5%) achieved the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM). This number increased to five students (25%) by the end of Cycle I. The most significant improvement occurred in Cycle II, where 13 students (65%) successfully reached the KKM. This consistent improvement from 5% to 65% demonstrates that using picture media was effective in enhancing the procedural text writing ability of Grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 8 Padangsidimpuan.).

Abstract

This research is intended to examine common grammatical errors found in the English speech produced by a Turkish YouTuber, Handeyavz, in her video entitled “Cozy Travel Vlog” within the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The study is based on the issue that many EFL learners can speak English fluently but still frequently make grammatical mistakes, especially during spontaneous communication. This phenomenon raises concerns regarding the relationship between fluency and grammatical accuracy in spoken English. Therefore, the research aims to identify the types of grammatical errors produced by the speaker and explore the factors contributing to those errors. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method using a content analysis approach. The data were gathered through documentation techniques by selecting the video, repeatedly observing it, and transcribing the speaker’s utterances into written text. After that, the data were analysed through several stages, including error identification, classification, description, and explanation. The results reveal that the most frequent grammatical errors involve subject-verb agreement, incorrect tense forms, omission of articles, and inappropriate use of prepositions.

Abstract

This research intends to: 1) Analyze the improvement of students' reading ability related to report text following the introduction of the Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) technique in grade X SMA Negeri 1 Batang Toru. 2) Identify the variations in reading skills between students utilizing the CSR method compared to conventional methods. 3) Assess students' answers to the deployment of the CSR approach in the reading comprehension process. This study applies Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology with 36 kids as subjects, of whom 33 participated. Data-gathering approaches were accomplished using tests, questionnaires, and observations. The data reveal that the average score of students in the pre-test was 63.75, or 41.66%, whereas the post-test average jumped to 71.25, or 70.25%. The percentage of pupils achieving the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) in the pre-test was 22.22%, increasing to 70.25% in the post-test. Students' answers to the CSR technique were also positive, with 75% expressing favorable feedback.
