Abstract

Anemia remains a major public health problem among adolescent girls in Indonesia. The effectiveness of iron supplementation programs is often constrained by inadequate knowledge and poor adherence to iron tablet consumption. This study analyzed the effects of iron supplementation integrated with nutrition education on knowledge, adherence, and hemoglobin (Hb) levels among adolescent girls. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was conducted among 56 adolescent girls from four senior high schools in Maros Regency, Indonesia, using multistage cluster random sampling, with two schools allocated to an intervention group (n = 27, iron supplementation plus nutrition education) and two schools to a control group (n = 29, iron supplementation only). Baseline knowledge scores did not differ significantly between groups (p = 0.115); adherence was not assessed at baseline, as it was a prospective outcome measured throughout the intervention using the DOS method. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, paired t-test, and ANCOVA, with baseline hemoglobin, dietary intake, nutritional status, and menstrual cycle as covariates. Knowledge increased significantly in the intervention group (p < 0.001), with significant between-group differences in knowledge (p < 0.001) and adherence (92.6% vs. 44.8%; p = 0.002). Mean Hb rose significantly in the intervention group, from 13.12 ± 1.78 to 14.15 ± 1.35 g/dL (p = 0.011). Adjusted Hb remained significantly higher in the intervention than control (13.86 vs. 12.90 g/dL; F = 6.065; p = 0.017). Integrating nutrition education into iron supplementation programs improved knowledge, adherence, and Hb levels, supporting incorporation into school-based anemia prevention efforts.

Abstract

Background : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by disturbances in insulin secretion and action. Effective management of DM requires optimal blood glucose regulation, in which nutrition education plays a crucial role in enhancing the nutritional knowledge of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of nutrition education on nutritional knowledge and Random Blood Glucose (RBG) levels among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the service area of UPT Turikale Health Center, Maros Regency. Methods : The research design employed a quasi-experimental approach involving 30 respondents who were divided into two groups: an intervention group that received nutrition education through a nutrition booklet, and a control group that did not receive any education. Data were collected using a nutritional knowledge questionnaire and Random Blood Glucose (RBG) examination. Data analysis was performed using an Independent T-test with a significance level of p<0.05. Results : The intervention group showed a significant improvement in nutrition knowledge (p = 0.000), whereas the change in Random Blood Glucose (RBG) levels was not statistically significant (p = 0.701). Nevertheless, a shift in blood glucose categories toward normal levels was observed after the nutritional education. Conclusions : The intervention group demonstrated a significant improvement in nutritional knowledge (p=0.000), while the change in RBG levels was not statistically significant (p=0.701). However, there was a noticeable shift in blood glucose level categories toward the normal range following the nutrition education.

Abstract

Background: Type II diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to impaired insulin secretion or resistance. Nutrition education plays an important role in regulating diet and controlling blood glucose levels. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of nutrition education on Blood Glucose Levels (GDS) and macronutrient intake in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Methods: The study used a quasi experiment design with a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 30 respondents were divided into two groups: 4-week nutrition education and no education controls. Data was collected through periodic blood glucose checks, and 24-hour food recalls.Results: Nutrition education had no significant effect on blood glucose levels during (p=0.701). However, there was a significant effect on changes in carbohydrate intake (p=0.002), while energy intake (p=0.133), protein (p=0.735), and fat (p=0.066) showed no significant change. Conclusion: Nutrition education does not have a significant effect on reducing blood glucose levels at any time, but it has a significant effect on increasing carbohydrate intake, although it is not optimal for energy, protein, and fat.

Abstract

Anaemia remains a severe public health problem affecting adolescent girls. Despite government-provided Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation, adherence remains low due to unpleasant taste and odour. To analyse the impact of blood-boosting tablet (IFA) intervention accompanied by orange fruit on liking levels, consumption adherence, and haemoglobin levels among adolescent girls. This quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pre-test-post-test design involved 56 adolescent girls from four schools in Maros Regency, Indonesia. Participants were allocated by cluster into an intervention group (n=27) and a control group (n=29), without individual randomization. The intervention group received IFA tablets with 100–150 g of orange fruit once weekly for four weeks, while the control group received IFA tablets alone. Taste and aroma liking were assessed using a 5-point hedonic scale, and adherence was monitored using Directly Observed Supplementation (DOS). Haemoglobin levels were measured at pre-test and post-test. Liking and adherence were analysed using the Mann–Whitney U test, while post-test haemoglobin was analysed using ANCOVA adjusted for covariates. He intervention group had higher mean ranks for taste liking (35.15 vs. 22.31; p=0.001), aroma liking (32.78 vs. 24.52; p=0.044), and adherence (35.06 vs. 22.40; p=0.002) than the control group. After covariate adjustment, study group was associated with post-test Hb (p=0.005; partial η²=0.159). IFA supplementation with orange fruit showed better outcomes in terms of liking, adherence, and haemoglobin levels compared with IFA supplementation alone. However, these findings cannot yet establish a causal relationship due to the non-randomized study design, short intervention duration, and limitations related to cluster-level allocation.
