Abstract

Anemia remains a major public health problem among adolescent girls in Indonesia. The effectiveness of iron supplementation programs is often constrained by inadequate knowledge and poor adherence to iron tablet consumption. This study analyzed the effects of iron supplementation integrated with nutrition education on knowledge, adherence, and hemoglobin (Hb) levels among adolescent girls. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was conducted among 56 adolescent girls from four senior high schools in Maros Regency, Indonesia, using multistage cluster random sampling, with two schools allocated to an intervention group (n = 27, iron supplementation plus nutrition education) and two schools to a control group (n = 29, iron supplementation only). Baseline knowledge scores did not differ significantly between groups (p = 0.115); adherence was not assessed at baseline, as it was a prospective outcome measured throughout the intervention using the DOS method. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, paired t-test, and ANCOVA, with baseline hemoglobin, dietary intake, nutritional status, and menstrual cycle as covariates. Knowledge increased significantly in the intervention group (p < 0.001), with significant between-group differences in knowledge (p < 0.001) and adherence (92.6% vs. 44.8%; p = 0.002). Mean Hb rose significantly in the intervention group, from 13.12 ± 1.78 to 14.15 ± 1.35 g/dL (p = 0.011). Adjusted Hb remained significantly higher in the intervention than control (13.86 vs. 12.90 g/dL; F = 6.065; p = 0.017). Integrating nutrition education into iron supplementation programs improved knowledge, adherence, and Hb levels, supporting incorporation into school-based anemia prevention efforts.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to impaired insulin secretion or action. Diabetes management can be achieved through dietary adherence and physical activity. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between dietary adherence and physical activity with random blood glucose levels (RBG) in patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: This research employed an analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 50 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a dietary adherence questionnaire, a physical activity questionnaire, and random blood glucose level measurements. Results: The findings showed that 58% of respondents were non-adherent to diet, 62% had moderate physical activity, and 74% had high random blood glucose levels. Chi-Square test results indicated a significant relationship between dietary adherence and random blood glucose levels (p = 0.003), while physical activity showed no significant relationship (p = 0.144). Conclusion: Dietary adherence plays an important role in controlling blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus, whereas physical activity does not have a direct relationship with blood glucose levels. It is recommended that healthcare providers strengthen education on healthy diet, patients become more disciplined in adhering to dietary recommendations, and future research includes additional variables to obtain more comprehensive results.

Abstract

Background: Cookies are a popular snack in Indonesia, typically made from wheat flour, eggs, and margarine. This study developed mocaf flour-based cookies with tempeh and spinach flour to enhance nutritional value, particularly protein and iron. Mocaf flour served as a gluten-free alternative, tempeh flour as a protein source, and spinach flour to increase iron content. Objective: This study aimed to determine the acceptability and analyze the carbohydrate, protein, and iron content of mocaf flour cookies with added tempeh and spinach flour. Methods: A completely randomized design (CRD) was used with three replications and four formulas (one control and three modified). Fifty untrained student panelists conducted sensory testing. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test, followed by the Mann–Whitney test to determine differences among formulas. Results: The control formula (F0) was the most preferred, while the modified formula F2 (25 g tempeh flour and 15 g spinach flour) received the highest score among modified formulas. The carbohydrate content per 10 g in F0 and F2 was 47% and 44%, respectively. The protein content of F0 was 2.3%, and F2 was 4.6%. The iron content of F0 was 32.76 μg/g, and F2 was 70.01 μg/g. Conclusions: Mocaf flour cookies with tempeh and spinach flour (F2) were well accepted by panelists and showed higher protein and iron content despite lower carbohydrate levels than F0.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that remains high in Indonesia, particularly in Papua. This condition can be influenced by various factors, including maternal age at marriage, macronutrient intake, and environmental hygiene and sanitation. This study aims to determine the relationship between maternal age at marriage, macronutrient intake, and sanitation hygiene with the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 12–59 months at the Enarotali Community Health Center in Papua. This study was quantitative with a cross-sectional design. The study population was all 29 stunted toddlers, selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through interviews using questionnaires, 24-hour recalls to assess macronutrient intake, and observations of sanitation hygiene conditions. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed no significant relationship between maternal age at marriage and the incidence of stunting (p=0.333). There is a significant relationship between carbohydrate (p=0.000) and protein (p=0.033) intake with the incidence of stunting, while energy (p=0.361), fat (p=0.197), and sanitation hygiene (p=0.221) intake did not show a significant relationship. Macronutrient intake, especially carbohydrates and protein, influences the incidence of stunting in toddlers, while maternal marital age and sanitation hygiene are not directly related. Efforts are needed to increase nutritional knowledge and improve family eating patterns as a measure to prevent stunting in the Papua region. Abstract

Background: Low body weight (underweight) in toddlers remains a nutritional challenge in Indonesia, with a national prevalence reaching 16.9% in 2024. Local food-based Supplementary Feeding (PMT) is one of the government-recommended nutrition intervention strategies to address this problem in an affordable and sustainable manner. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of local PMT in the form of chicken nuggets enriched with egg and vegetables on changes in body weight among underweight and at-risk-of-underweight toddlers in the working area of UPTD Puskesmas Topoyo in 2025. Methods: This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest. The sample consisted of 35 underweight toddlers who received local PMT for 28 days. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test to examine differences in body weight before and after the intervention, and the Mann-Whitney U test to analyze the relationship between PMT consumption compliance and the magnitude of weight gain. Results: Mean body weight increased from 9.2 kg (SD=2.1) to 9.8 kg (SD=2.2) after 28 days of intervention, with a mean increase of 0.6 kg (SD=0.6). The Wilcoxon test showed a significant difference between body weight before and after PMT administration (p=0.000). A total of 85.7% of toddlers were classified as compliant in consuming PMT (≥75%), but no significant difference in weight gain was found between compliant and non-compliant toddlers (p=0.536). Conclusion: Local PMT had a significant effect on increasing the body weight of underweight and at-risk-of-underweight toddlers within a 28-day period, so it can be considered as a routine nutrition intervention program at the community health center, while still taking into account the need for a longer intervention duration to achieve a comprehensive improvement in nutritional status.
