Abstract

Matoa (Pometia pinnata J.R. Forst. & G. Forst) can be used as traditional medicine. The plant contains secondary metabolite compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids and saponins that have the ability to inhibit the mechanism of action of bacteria. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of Matoa leaves against gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans and gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia at concentrations of 70, 50, 30 and 10% using the disc diffusion method, Ciprofloxacin as a positive control and DMSO as a negative control. Statistical test results on 70% concentration of ethyl acetate extract showed average results on the inhibition diameter of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Eschericia coli and Klebsiella pneumenia were 10.63, 13.43, 11.23, and 13.26 mm, respectively. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the n-hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of Matoa Leaf (Pometia pinnata J.R. Forst. & G. Forst) have the ability to inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans and gram negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia, but in the n-hexane extract of matoa leaves is not able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract

The limitations of conventional urea fertilizers are the high their solubility, inefficient use, and environmental impact. The objective of the study was to formulate the long-lasting urea slow-release fertilizer (SRF) in briquette form following the molding method. The briquettes were prepared using polystyrene (PS) and starch (ST) bioblend in three formulas. The ratios of urea to bioblend in Formulas 1, 2, and 3 were 1.5:1, 1:1, and 1:1.5, respectively. However, the ratios between PS and ST in Formulas 1, 2, and 3 were 3:1, 4:1, and 5:1, respectively. Urea levels in the briquette and in the dissolution medium were analyzed using a visible spectrophotometer. Urea was reacted by the addition of Ehrlich reagents. The absorbance of the solution was measured at a maximum absorption wavelength of 420 nm. The dissolution efficiency of urea from Formula 1, 2, and 3 was 34.84±0.52, 32.55±0.91, and 30.76±0.39%, respectively (p˂0.05). The release kinetics of urea from the briquette followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. The T90 from all of the formulas obtained in the range of 8.3 to 12.9 years. It is an extraordinary long lasting fertilizer release.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a condition of growth failure in infants due to several causes, which can impact both physical and cognitive development. One of the preventive factors for stunting is exclusive breastfeeding. Objective: To determine the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting in infants aged 2–3 years in the service area of the Rejosari Community Health Centre, Pekanbaru. Method: This is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted in June-July 2025. The population was children aged of 2-3 years that have experience of stunting, with a sample size of 34 participants using a total sampling technique. The data sources used were primary and secondary data. The instrument used was a microtoise, with the research instrument being a questionnaire on exclusive breastfeeding. Data were analysed based on univariate and bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test and Mann-Whitney test, with a normality test conducted prior to the Mann-Whitney test. Results: It showed that significant relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the occurrence of stunting (p = 0.024 OR value of 10.909). Result of the Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference in TB/U z-scores between toddlers who received exclusive breastfeeding and those who did not (p = 0.003). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the occurrence and severity of stunting in toddlers aged of 2–3 years. Toddlers who are not exclusively breastfed have a higher risk of stunting. Efforts are needed to raise mothers' awareness of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in preventing stunting.
