Abstract

Abstract

Engine overheating is a critical issue that reduces the performance and lifespan of heavy-duty trucks. At PT ABC, Tenggarong, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Scania P410 fleet experienced recurring overheating, leading to reduced reliability, increased downtime, and higher maintenance costs. This study applies the Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) framework to identify root causes and propose improvements. Data were obtained from operational records, maintenance logs, and field observations. Root cause analysis using Fishbone Diagram and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) revealed inadequate preventive maintenance, inefficient cooling systems, and poor operating practices as the main contributors. Kaizen-based improvements, including enhanced maintenance scheduling, standardized cooling inspections, and operator training, were implemented. As a result, overheating incidents decreased significantly, maintenance costs were reduced, and engine life was extended. The findings confirm that structured problem-solving methods are effective in improving technical reliability in the heavy equipment sector.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of mechanical competency development through training and certification on the performance of mechanics at PT XYZ, a nationwide heavy equipment distributor. The main issue lies in the high failure rate of certification exams, particularly in theory, caused by a misalignment between training materials and exam requirements. This mismatch reduces certification success rates, prolongs job completion times (lead time), and increases operational costs. Adopting a quantitative research design, the study utilizes surveys, SAP system data, and multiple regression analysis to examine the relationships among training, certification, work experience, and performance. Findings reveal that certification exerts a stronger influence than training alone, particularly in reducing lead time. Certified mechanics work faster, more accurately, and more efficiently. Moreover, work experience and task repetition significantly enhance performance. Therefore, an effective mechanic development strategy should integrate structured training, certification, and hands-on exposure to improve competency, lower costs, and boost productivity and customer satisfaction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of establishing a localized service point on after-sales performance in the mining sector. A case study was conducted at PT XYZ in Tenggarong, which faced issues with low On-Time In-Full (OTIF) delivery (~83%), far below the corporate target of 90%. As a result, PT XYZ captured only about 50% of PT PKSM’s spare parts sales potential. Using a mixed-method approach (DMAIC, customer satisfaction survey, IRR/NPV analysis), the findings show that developing a local service point can improve OTIF to ~95%, reduce downtime by more than 70%, increase customer satisfaction scores (from 2.8 to 4.3 on a 5-point Likert scale), and raise annual revenue by up to 74% (IDR 24 billion). Financial analysis confirms feasibility, with an IRR of ~75% and positive NPV even under pessimistic scenarios. Thus, a localized support point is proven to be both feasible and strategic for enhancing service performance and strengthening market position.

Abstract

The coal mining industry faces critical challenges due to the low Physical Availability (PA) of heavy equipment, leading to excessive downtime costs and unmet production targets. This study investigates the optimization of Komatsu PC1250 excavator availability at a Samarinda coal mining site by applying the Lean Six Sigma DMAIC framework combined with Predictive Inventory Management. Baseline data indicated PA at only 73%, below the 85% target, with an average Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) of 34 hours and spare parts On-Time In-Full (OTIF) of 78%. Using analytical tools such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fishbone diagrams, 5-Why analysis, and a predictive inventory system through two-bin Kanban and Vendor Held Stock (VHS), this study successfully reduced MTTR to ≤24 hours, improved Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) by 18%, and increased OTIF for critical parts to 95%. As a result, PC1250 availability rose significantly to 83%, approaching the corporate target. The findings confirm that integrating Lean Six Sigma with predictive inventory systems provides practical solutions for mining contractors to enhance productivity while reducing operational costs.

Abstract

This study proposes a Prescriptive Maintenance (RxM) framework aimed at improving the Physical Availability (PA) of Komatsu Dump Trucks HD785-7 operated under a Full Maintenance Contract (FMC) at PT ABC Site Sangkulirang. The research integrates the DMAIC methodology with the Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) process to systematically analyze operational failures. Historical breakdown data were preprocessed and modeled using a Naïve Bayes (NB) classifier, selected for its robustness in handling categorical features common in maintenance records. The model demonstrated high predictive performance with 97.93% accuracy, 100% precision, 94.12% recall, and an AUC of 0.995, indicating strong reliability in distinguishing high-risk conditions. The RxM framework was embedded into daily maintenance planning and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), supported by a monitoring dashboard for continuous feedback and retraining. As a result, the proportion of Breakdown Unscheduled (BUS) events decreased from 45% in 2024 to 26% in mid-2025, while fleet PA consistently exceeded the contractual target of 92%, reaching 95.5%. These findings confirm that embedding prescriptive analytics into maintenance workflows not only reduces unplanned downtime but also enhances resource allocation and decision-making. The case study highlights the practical value of combining statistical learning with structured process improvement to drive digital transformation in mining operations.
