Abstract

Background: Nurses play an essential role in implementing non-pharmacological pain management; however, the application of distraction and relaxation techniques in clinical practice remains limited due to insufficient knowledge and practical skills. Continuous professional development through structured training is needed to enhance nurses' competence and promote evidence-based nursing practice. Objective: This community service activity aimed to improve nurses' competence in applying distraction and relaxation techniques through a structured training program at Guido Valadares National Hospital (HNGV), Timor-Leste. Methods: This community service program involved 30 nurses who voluntarily participated in educational activities consisting of lectures, interactive discussions, demonstrations, and supervised practical sessions. Program evaluation was conducted using pretest and posttest questionnaires assessing knowledge, attitudes, practical skills, and clinical application. Descriptive analysis was used to summarize participants' competency levels, while the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was applied to support the evaluation of competency changes before and after the training. Results: Prior to the training, most participants demonstrated poor competency (60.0%), whereas after the program, the majority achieved good competency (73.3%). The mean competency score increased from 58.50 ± 11.06 before training to 84.03 ± 9.63 after training. Statistical analysis showed a significant improvement in participants' competency following the implementation of the program (Z = −4.783; p < 0.001). Conclusion: The community service training program successfully improved participants' competencies in implementing distraction and relaxation techniques as non-pharmacological pain management interventions. The program may serve as a sustainable strategy for strengthening evidence-based nursing practice and improving the quality of nursing services at Guido Valadares National Hospital.

Abstract

Background: Pulmonary outpatients often experience recurrent respiratory symptoms requiring continuous support. Limited consultation time, increasing digital health use, and the need for symptom monitoring highlight the importance of AI-assisted nursing care in outpatient pulmonary services. Purpose: This study analyzed the effect of AI-assisted nursing care on digital health literacy, symptom management, and continuity of care among pulmonary outpatients at Bhayangkara Surabaya Hospital. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a two-group pretest-posttest design involved 70 pulmonary outpatients (35 intervention, 35 control). The intervention group received AI-assisted nursing care; the control group received standard care. Data were collected using the Digital Health Literacy Instrument, a symptom management questionnaire, and the Nijmegen Continuity Questionnaire. Analysis used paired t-test, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, independent t-test, and Mann-Whitney U Test. Results: The intervention group showed significantly greater improvements than the control group. Digital health literacy was significantly higher (t = 9.11, p < 0.001), symptom management improved significantly (Z = −7.84, p < 0.001), and continuity of care differed significantly between groups (t = 8.99, p < 0.001). Change scores were substantially greater in the intervention group, particularly for continuity of care (18.95 vs. 2.26), with small effect sizes across all outcomes. Conclusion: AI-assisted nursing care can strengthen digital nursing support for pulmonary outpatients. Integrating structured digital education, chatbot interaction, symptom tracking, reminders, and nurse monitoring improves digital health literacy, symptom management, and continuity of care in outpatient pulmonary services.

Abstract

Introduction: High-quality nursing services are critical to hospital performance; however, they are frequently constrained by imbalances between nurse availability, competency, and workload. Simpang Lima Gumul Kediri Regional Hospital experiences such challenges, as indicated by excessive workload conditions in the Gelatik Ward and potential fatigue risks in the Perkutut Ward. Additionally, administrative issues arise from nurses’ limited awareness of the validity periods of their Work Plan Requirements (RKK) and Practice Permits (SIP), which can lead to temporary deactivation from clinical duties and reassignment to non-clinical tasks, thereby reducing effective nursing capacity. Objective: This community service program aims to develop and implement a digital system to support nursing workforce management by addressing staffing workload gaps and improving administrative compliance related to RKK and SIP validity. Methods: The program employed the introduction and implementation of E-PROLIC (Electronic Professional License), a digital platform designed to monitor the validity status of nurses’ RKK and SIP. The system integrates administrative tracking with workload analysis using the Workload Indicator of Staffing Need (WISN) method to support staffing planning and prevent permit expiration. Results: The WISN analysis showed that the Gelatik Ward requires 20.21 nurses but has only 12 available, resulting in a WISN Ratio of 0.59, which indicates an excessive workload. In contrast, the Perkutut Ward requires 12.78 nurses and has 13 available, yielding a WISN Ratio of 1.00, indicating adequate staffing levels. Conclusion: The implementation of E-PROLIC provides a digital mechanism for monitoring RKK and SIP validity while supporting workload-based staffing analysis, thereby contributing to improved administrative management and nursing workforce planning.
