Abstract

This study discusses the role of moderate Sunni Muslims in restraining the spread of extremism by Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) in Côte d'Ivoire. The research focuses on two main issues: the pattern of the jihadist Sahel network's expansion into northern Côte d'Ivoire, and the response of the Muslim community coordinated by Sunni Islamic organizations through proselytization, education, and strengthening social cohesion. This study employs a qualitative method based on literature review by examining scholarly articles and other related literature, and uses the Radicalization and Counter-Radicalization Theory to analyze radical influences and efforts to prevent them. The findings show that the threat to Côte d'Ivoire did not emerge abruptly, but developed as a spillover effect from conflicts in Mali and Burkina Faso, particularly through the northern border regions that are administratively weak and socioeconomically vulnerable. In this context, moderate Sunni Muslim communities, through religious organizations such as AMSCI, CODIS, and JEMCI, serve as ideological and social buffers by promoting a peaceful Islamic narrative, educating youth cadres, utilizing digital media, collaborating with the state, and involving Christian communities as a pluralistic nation. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of religious responses continues to depend on strengthening state presence, local economic development, and the governance of security in border areas.

Abstract

Theological stigmatization positioning women as objects of misfortune (bad omen) remains deeply entrenched due to the dominance of textual hadith readings that contradict Aisyah’s contextual correction. Unlike previous research, which has primarily focused on sanad criticism, this study addresses a scholarly gap by highlighting the politics of memory. Employing an interdisciplinary approach drawing on Foucault, Mernissi, and Gadamer and utilizing library research methods, this study aims to deconstruct the power relations underlying the canonization of the hadith in question. The findings reveal that the marginalization of Aisyah’s narrative is not a historical coincidence, but the product of a patriarchal epistemological hegemony that domesticates female intellectual authority to preserve the integrity of male narrators. In conclusion, the validity of misogynistic hadiths in the contemporary era cannot be established solely through sanad continuity; instead, they must be critically examined through the lens of matan content and the Tawhid paradigm to restore women as dignified subjects rather than sources of misfortune.

Abstract

This article addresses the apparent paradox in Ibn Taymiyyah's thought: his reputation for rigid literalism in theology contrasted with his flexibility and contextualism in socio-political law. This study aims to demonstrate that this distinction represents not an inconsistency, but rather a conscious and coherent strategy of epistemological demarcation. Employing a qualitative library research method, the study utilizes socio-historical readings and content analysis of Ibn Taymiyyah's key concepts within the realms of creed (aqidah) and jurisprudence/politics (fiqh/siyasah). The findings indicate that Ibn Taymiyyah distinguishes revelatory texts based on the character of their objects: theological verses are positioned as a tawqifi domain demanding submission (taslim) without philosophical speculation, whereas legal verses are understood through a maqashidi lens, opening space for independent reasoning (ijtihad) to achieve public benefit (maslahah). This pattern is consistent in his reading of divine attribute verses (e.g., Q.S. Ṭāhā: 5), which tends to be affirmative without metaphorical interpretation (ta'wil), and in his contextual approach to public law issues, such as limiting the application of war verses (e.g., Q.S. At-Taubah: 5) through historical context and legal objectives. These findings correct simplistic binary labelings of Ibn Taymiyyah and help explain the error of certain contemporary groups who inappropriately transpose theological rigidity into the public legal sphere, which ought to remain responsive.

Abstract

This study critically examines Bukhari Hadith number 5101, which narrates Abu Lahab's exemption from punishment attributed to his act of freeing the slave Tsuwaibah. Methodologically, this library-based research employs the matn criticism approach developed by Shalahuddin Al-Idlibi. Primary data sources include hadith collections, while secondary data comprises various scholarly books, journal articles, Qur'anic interpretation, sirah nabawiyah, and other literature relevant to the research context. The research findings indicate that the hadith's matn does not contradict Qur’anic verses, other authentic hadiths, sirah nabawiyah, rationality, or existing historical facts, and does not have a haphazard meaning. The applied metanarrative criticism definitively confirms that the additional narrative concerning Abu Lahab’s exemption from punishment constitutes a narratorial insertion (idraj). Crucially, this insertion does not diminish the hadith’s overall authenticity, neither in its isnad nor its matn. This study particularly highlights the importance of matn criticism, an area that has historically received less academic attention compared to isnad criticism. Furthermore, it aims to foster the development of more applicable methods of matn criticism within contemporary hadith scholarship. The implications of this research are expected to both enrich existing hadith research methodologies and clarify public understanding regarding the validity of narratives about Abu Lahab’s exemption from punishment.

Abstract

This article examines the socio-ecological ramifications of the post-mining land crisis in Indonesia, which necessitates a more sophisticated theological response beyond general readings of environmental degradation. This research aims to address this crisis by proposing a novel interpretation of the terms fasād (corruption/damage) and ihlāk (annihilation/destruction) in QS. Al-Baqarah: 205, utilizing a Maqashidi Tafsir approach. Methodologically, this study is a qualitative library-based research that operationalizes the Maqashidi Tafsir framework proposed by Abdul Mustaqim. The analysis is conducted through three stages: first, examining the linguistic structure and comparative meanings of fasād and ihlāk; second, extracting the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah (objectives of Islamic law) from QS. Al-Baqarah: 205; and third, contextualizing these maqāṣidi values to evaluate the status of ecocide in Indonesia's post-mining land crisis. The results demonstrate that the term ihlāk offers a more precise conceptualization of the total destruction of ecosystems (al-ḥarṡ wa an-nasl). This practice is identified as a multidimensional violation of the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, namely the preservation of life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), property (ḥifẓ al-māl), and the environment (ḥifẓ al-bī’ah). Furthermore, through a protective approach, the study highlights the necessity for governmental mining control through legal policies and corporate accountability. Meanwhile, a productive approach yields progressive actions in the form of innovative post-mining recovery and sustainable development.
