Abstract

This study aims to implement a real-time streaming system as a monitoring tool during the ship berthing process at a smart port, analyze the effectiveness of the streaming system in improving the monitoring and safety of the ship berthing process at a smart port, and explain how the components work in real-time to support the ship berthing process at a smart port. The ship berthing process is a crucial stage in port operations that requires real-time monitoring to ensure safety and efficiency. The developed system uses a Raspberry Pi as the main controller integrated with a V2 camera module, a proximity sensor, a WiFi hotspot module, and an Internet of Things (IoT)-based power monitoring system. Visual data in the form of streaming video and sensor data are sent in real-time to the monitoring application to assist port operators in monitoring the distance of ships to the dock. The research method used is Research and Development (R&D) which includes the design, assembly, testing, and evaluation stages of the system. Test results show that the system performs well in displaying real-time video streaming with an average streaming delay of 1.54%, accurately detecting vessel distances with an average of 0.81%, and providing relevant supporting information to improve the safety of ship berthing processes. Therefore, this system has the potential to be a supporting solution in the development of a safe and efficient smart port concept. Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Cadet Worksheet (LKT) in helping cadets understand the calculation of the Waterplane (WP) area and Ton per Centimetre Immersion (TPC) using Simpson’s 1/3 rule. The main problem underlying this research is that many cadets still find it difficult to connect integral concepts with numerical data in the context of shipping. The research was conducted at the Surabaya Maritime Polytechnic involving cadets from the DIII Marine Engineering and DIV Ship Machinery Engineering Technology programs as subjects. The method employed was a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches using instruments such as field notes, a positive opinion questionnaire (KPP), and cognitive ability tests (TKK). Qualitative analysis was carried out through data triangulation, while quantitative analysis used the Wilcoxon test since the data were not normally distributed. The results indicated that the learning process was student-centered, the lecturer implemented the lessons systematically, and cadet activities were relevant to the learning objectives. A total of 100% of cadets gave positive opinions regarding the LKT, and the Wilcoxon test results showed a significant improvement in cognitive ability after the learning process. Thus, it can be concluded that the developed LKT is effective in supporting cadets’ understanding of the application of Simpson’s 1/3 rule in calculating WP and TPC.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the causes and impacts of nozzle burner clogging in the auxiliary steam boiler aboard the MV. Pan Kristine. The issue arose from steam pressure drops and repeated flame failures while the ship was anchored, suspected to result from malfunction in the combustion system. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews with engine crew, documentation, and literature study. The findings reveal that the clogging of the nozzle burner is caused by insufficient routine maintenance according to the Planned Maintenance System (PMS), inefficient fuel filtration, worn or damaged nozzles, and electrode spacing that does not comply with the instruction manual. These issues lead to reduced combustion efficiency, increased soot and scale accumulation in the combustion chamber, and overall operational disruption of the boiler. The study recommends implementing a strict PMS, regular inspection of fuel filters and nozzles, and improved crew training to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the auxiliary boiler system.
