Abstract

This study analyzes the role of the Zero Waste Learning Class (Kelas Belajar Zero Waste/BZW) in shaping environmental behavior change and collective identity through community-based environmental education. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed to explore the lived experiences of 14 BZW alumni as part of a grassroots sustainability movement. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and analysis of community documents, and analyzed using thematic analysis guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and Collective Identity Theory. The findings show that participation in BZW promotes gradual and sustained pro-environmental behavior change, influenced by positive attitudes toward zero waste practices, strengthened community social norms, and increased perceived behavioral control through practical learning processes. This process also fosters a shift in motivation and values from individual concern to collective ecological responsibility. The study concludes that the Zero Waste Learning Class functions as a transformative learning environment that contributes to the development of ecological citizenship at the community level.

Abstract

Effective management of mangrove ecosystems is essential for the conservation of these vital habitats and the maintenance of their ecosystem services. This process involves multiple stakeholders to ensure sustainability. This study aims to identify the stakeholders involved in mangrove management in Mundu, Cirebon, map their relationships, and assess their roles within this context. Employing a qualitative approach, the research describes stakeholder involvement in mangrove ecosystem management and utilizes UCINET 6 software for analysis. This analysis identifies the stakeholders with the strongest engagement and those playing pivotal roles in mangrove management. The findings indicate that the primary actors in mangrove management in Mundu are the Community-Based Coastal Resource Management group (Pokmaswas), which has a degree centrality of 1.2222; the Village Government, with a value of 1.3333; and the Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, which has a value of 0.6666. These results suggest that both Pokmaswas and Village Governments play central roles in mangrove management, with the Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries following closely behind. This highlights the critical contribution of community groups to the success of mangrove conservation efforts in the region. However, UCINET analysis also reveals that interactions among stakeholders are limited, indicating a gap in collaboration. This lack of interaction may lead to suboptimal management and hinder the development of the mangrove ecosystem in Mundu.

Abstract

Abstract

The Special Purpose Forest Area of the Indonesian National Counterterrorism Agency (KHDTK BNPT) in Central Java, Indonesia, is a forest area developed for forest rehabilitation, community empowerment, and social rehabilitation, including deradicalization and social reintegration programs for former terrorism convicts through productive forestry activities. However, repeated forest fires, vegetation degradation, and community dependence on land utilization pose challenges to sustainable management. This study aimed to determine sustainable management priorities of KHDTK BNPT using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Data were collected through field observations, interviews, literature reviews, and AHP questionnaires involving eight expert respondents. The criteria and management alternatives were developed based on ecological, social, economic, and institutional considerations integrated with the Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) approach. The results showed that institutional and forest management was the highest-priority criterion (0.413), followed by ecology and environment (0.265), Social and Community Dimension (0.163), and Economic Dimension (0.159). The global priority ranking indicated that institutional activity of Forest Farmer Groups (KTH), area security stability, land tenure status, and Vegetation Density were the highest-priority management alternatives. These findings demonstrate that sustainable management of KHDTK BNPT depends on strengthening local institutions, improving governance effectiveness, maintaining ecosystem rehabilitation efforts, and enhancing community participation to support the long-term implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS). Therefore, management programs should prioritize strengthening the capacity and involvement of Forest Farmer Groups (KTH), improving area security and land tenure clarity, and maintaining vegetation restoration activities as key actions to support the implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and sustainable forest management.
