Abstract

Guidance and Counseling (BK) teachers' professionalism is a key element in ensuring the quality of school counseling services. Alongside pedagogical and technical competencies, the counselor’s personal development plays a strategic role in establishing therapeutic relationship effectiveness. This study aims to explore the reinforcement of BK teachers' professionalism through the counselor's personal development in high school counseling practices. Utilizing a qualitative approach with a single-case study design, this research involved a BK teacher at SMAN 3 Selong, purposively selected based on over 15 years of experience and a track record as a national instructor. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model. The results reveal that professionalism reinforcement based on personal development manifests in four primary processes: (1) self-reflection on handling critical cases, (2) managing student emotions through integrating coaching techniques and the restitution triangle, (3) independent competency development by designing assessment instrument applications, and (4) internalizing professional ethics and multi-directional interpersonal communication. This process significantly enhances emotional maturity, interpersonal competence, active listening skills, and professional courage in mediating. This study recommends integrating personal approach training and micro-counseling techniques during undergraduate studies.

Abstract

Social isolation and peer rejection potentially impede students' psychological development and academic achievements. This qualitative descriptive case study aims to analyze students' social isolation profiles to formulate a comprehensive, sociometry-based individual counseling intervention framework at SMAN 3 Selong. Data were collected from 35 participants in class 10-1 through a multiple-criteria sociometric questionnaire encompassing personal, social, learning, and career domains complemented by in-depth interviews and document review. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The sociometric findings indicated a sharp social polarization within the classroom, where eight students were classified as low status and two students experienced total social isolation (zero choices) due to group exclusion (cliques). Sociogram visualizations confirmed unilateral interaction preferences lacking reciprocity across all four orientation domains. Based on these empirical data, an individual counseling intervention was formulated, comprising three systematic clinical stages: core exploration of rejection issues, cognitive restructuring, and social skills training. This personal intervention framework is recommended as an applicable guide for school counselors to mitigate social isolation and optimize students' interpersonal cohesion.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the improvement of university students' understanding of the implementation of guidance and counseling (GC) management and program development at junior high schools through the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method. The study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that prior to participating in the FGD, students' understanding of the implementation of GC management and program development was limited to conceptual knowledge and they had difficulty relating theory to actual school practices. After participating in the FGD, students demonstrated a significant improvement in understanding, particularly regarding the stages of GC program management, including needs assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and program follow-up. This improvement was supported by interactive discussions, the facilitator's expertise, the relevance of the materials to real school practices, and opportunities for participants to exchange ideas and experiences. However, several challenges were identified, including differences in students' prior knowledge, limited field experience, and the relatively short duration of the FGD sessions. Therefore, the study concludes that Focus Group Discussion is an effective learning strategy for bridging the gap between theory and practice and for enhancing the professional readiness of Guidance and Counseling students in implementing and developing school guidance and counseling programs.
