Abstract

The development of social media has transformed religious preaching from conventional spaces into broader and more interactive digital environments. One emerging phenomenon is the dissemination of religious messages through TikTok, including preaching content delivered by Gufron. This study aims to analyze the representation of fatalism and mystical beliefs (klenik) in such digital preaching content from the perspective of the psychology of religion. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, this study examined ten TikTok videos uploaded by Gufron during 2023–2024, selected purposively based on their thematic relevance to fatalistic and mystical narratives. Data were analyzed through three stages: coding, categorization, and interpretation based on Krippendorff’s content analysis model. The findings reveal two main forms of fatalistic and mystical narrative: (1) excessive emphasis on divine predestination (qadar) without adequately addressing the role of human effort (ikhtiar), and (2) claims of direct communication with angels—particularly Malaikat Israfil—which border on mystical belief. From the psychology of religion perspective, these narratives are readily accepted by audiences because they provide psychological certainty and emotional comfort amid life’s uncertainties. This study contributes to the discourse on digital da’wah and religious cognition, and highlights the need for enhanced theological and digital literacy among Muslim audiences.

Abstract

Reading the Qur'an using the Iqro method remains a challenge for many santri (students) at community-based Islamic study centers (TPA), particularly regarding makhraj (articulation point) accuracy, tajwid mastery, and reading fluency. This community service activity aimed to improve the Iqro reading fluency of 37 santri at TPA Annisa 2 Palangka Raya through an intensive, one-on-one mentoring approach carried out by university students during a community service program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN). The activity used a descriptive qualitative approach involving direct observation, individual reading assistance, and periodic evaluation across four stages: mapping the santri's initial reading ability, planning the mentoring schedule, providing direct one-on-one assistance, and evaluating reading accuracy at the end of each session. The results show that individual mentoring, combined with a gentle and persuasive teaching approach, was effective in improving pronunciation accuracy, reading fluency, and short-surah memorization, especially among santri at Iqro levels 5 and 6 who had previously experienced the most difficulty. The presence of the mentoring team reduced the reading queue and allowed each santri to receive guided practice on a full page without shortening the material, while collaboration between students, teachers (ustazah), and TPA management strengthened the sustainability of the Qur'an education program. This activity implies that structured, individualized mentoring can serve as an effective, low-cost strategy for improving Qur'an reading fluency in non-formal Islamic education settings, and that its continuation by TPA teachers after the mentoring period ends is essential to sustain the progress that has been achieved.
