Abstract

Hemodialysis is a long-term renal replacement therapy that can affect patients’ daily functioning and psychological well-being. Depression is common in this population and may reduce quality of life and treatment adherence. However, evidence on whether hemodialysis duration is associated with depression remains inconsistent, and local multi-center data from Kupang City are limited. Objective: To analyze the relationship between duration of hemodialysis and depression level among hemodialysis patients in Kupang City. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted in July–August 2025 at three hemodialysis centers in Kupang City (RSUD W.Z. Johanes, RS Siloam, and RSUP Ben Mboi). Using purposive sampling, 163 respondents were recruited from a population of 365 routine hemodialysis patients. Depression was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Hemodialysis duration was obtained from medical records and categorized as <12 months, 12–24 months, and >24 months. Data were analyzed descriptively and tested using the Chi-square test. Findings: Most respondents were not depressed (60.7%), while 39.3% had mild to severe depression. The largest proportion had undergone hemodialysis for >24 months (35.6%). There was no statistically significant association between hemodialysis duration and depression level (p = 0.434). Implications: Depression among hemodialysis patients appears to be influenced by factors beyond treatment duration, supporting the need for routine depression screening and psychosocial support integrated into hemodialysis care. Originality: This multi-center study provides local evidence from three hospitals in Kupang City using a standardized instrument (BDI-II), helping clarify inconsistent prior findings and reinforcing a multifactorial view of depression in hemodialysis patients.

Abstract

Long-term kidney disease is a worldwide health issue that is becoming more common, leading to numerous individuals needing ongoing hemodialysis treatment. Understanding the illness and the management of hemodialysis is vital for successful treatment and improving life quality. However, the length of time a patient undergoes hemodialysis does not always match their level of understanding about the condition. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between hemodialysis duration and knowledge levels about chronic kidney disease among hemodialysis patients in Kupang City. The research method used was analytical with a cross-sectional design. Sampling was conducted using purposive sampling according to specific inclusion criteria. Knowledge levels were assessed using the Chronic Kidney Disease Knowledge Questionnaire, while the duration of hemodialysis was gathered from medical records. The data analysis involved univariate and bivariate analysis, utilizing the Chi-square test (p < 0.05). A large portion of the participants were between the ages of 52 to 66 years (41.1%), had completed high school (35.6%), and were either unemployed or retired (36.2%). Regarding the length of hemodialysis, the majority of participants fell into the category of more than 24 months (43.6%). Knowledge levels ranged from good to poor. Bivariate analysis indicated no significant connection between the duration of hemodialysis and the understanding of chronic kidney disease (p-value = 0.500). There is no association between the length of hemodialysis and the understanding of chronic kidney disease among patients receiving hemodialysis in Kupang City.

Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhea ranks among the most prevalent menstrual issues in teenagers, impacting their everyday life and general well-being. The age at which menstruation begins has frequently been linked to the likelihood of experiencing dysmenorrhea; however, previous studies have produced mixed results. The goal of this research was to examine the connection between the age of menarche and the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea in female students at Kristen Citra Bangsa Mandiri Junior High School in Kupang. This investigation utilized an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 54 students were chosen using purposive sampling according to specific inclusion and exclusion standards. Menarche age was classified as early (younger than 12 years), normal (12 to 14 years), and late (older than 14 years). The WaLIDD Score was employed to evaluate primary dysmenorrhea. The data were processed using the chi-square test, with a significance threshold set at p<0.05. The findings indicated that 55.6% of female students had a normal age for the start of menstruation, while 44.4% started early. The occurrence of primary dysmenorrhea was found to be 77.8%, with mild cases at 38.9%, moderate cases at 31.5%, and severe cases at 7.4%. Those who did not experience primary dysmenorrhea made up 22.2% of the respondents. The statistical analysis yielded a p=0.90 value. There was no significant link between the age of menarche and the prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea among students at Citra Bangsa Mandiri Christian Junior High School in Kupang City.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 (DMT2) is a metabolic disorder that usually involves chronic inflammatory responses. The Neutrophil–Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) is often utilized as a simple and cost-effective indicator of inflammation in the entire body. However, studies examining its connection to HbA1c, which indicates long-term glucose management, reveal inconsistent findings across various populations. This study aimed to assess the relationship between HbA1c levels and NLR values among T2DM patients attending the Internal Medicine Clinic of Mgr. Gabriel Manek Hospital, Atambua. This analytical observational study employed a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 62 outpatients with T2DM, selected through accidental sampling between August and November 2025. HbA1c levels and leukocyte differential counts used to calculate NLR were obtained from medical records. Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test due to non-normal distribution. Most respondents were female (56.5%) and aged 46–55 years (51.6%). A large proportion of patients demonstrated suboptimal glycemic control (HbA1c ≥ 7%) at 91.9%. NLR values were predominantly within the normal range (79.0%). Statistical analysis showed no significant relationship between HbA1c levels and NLR (p = 0.321; r = 0.128). This study found no meaningful correlation between HbA1c levels and NLR among T2DM outpatients in the study setting. The findings suggest that in stable outpatient populations, elevated HbA1c levels may not directly reflect systemic inflammatory activity as measured by NLR.

Abstract

Hemodialysis is a treatment that begins once a person is identified as having end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) and will continue for the duration of their life or until the individual has a kidney transplant. Nevertheless, many CKD patients receiving hemodialysis often face issues with malnutrition. This research aimed to explore how the length of time spent on hemodialysis affects the nutritional health of CKD patients in Kupang City. The study used an observational analytical method with a cross-sectional approach through direct interviews and Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements. Sampling was conducted using consecutive sampling with 110 patients, and analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test. The findings revealed that a large portion of participants fell within the age range of 41 to 60 years (47.3%) and that most were male (57.3%). Hypertension emerged as the most prevalent comorbidity, affecting 32.9% of the subjects. A significant number of individuals received hemodialysis two times a week (84.5%) and had been undergoing this treatment for over 24 months (37.3%). The bivariate analysis indicated no notable connection between the length of hemodialysis and nutritional health as defined by BMI (P>0.05), yet a significant association was found between the duration of hemodialysis and nutritional health assessed via the Simple Nutrition Screening Tool (P<0.05). Consistent nutritional assessments using the Simple Nutrition Screening Tool are essential for all hemodialysis patients to identify malnutrition risks early, allowing timely and appropriate dietary interventions. It is recommended that patients focus more on their nutritional habits and follow dietary guidelines set by nutritionists to avoid malnutrition and its associated issues.

Abstract

Double lumen catheter in hemodialysis relies on central venous access device (CVAD) for treatment. The use of CVAD can cause damage to the skin, so wounds arising from CVAD insertion have the potential to become an entry point for bacteria. In CDL insertion, self-care is very important to maintain health, besides good clean and healthy living behaviors can also prevent diseases such as infections that are common. To determine the effect of PHBS on the incidence of infection in hemodialysis patients with double lumen catheter installation at Siloam Kupang Hospital. This type of research design uses observational analytics with a cross sectional approach. Sampling using total sampling technique, the sample will be taken according to the population size, where 57 patients were obtained. The data in this study were analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi square test. There is no significant correlation between clean and healthy living behavior and the incidence of infection of hemodialysis patients with double lumen catheter installation at Siloam Kupang Hospital with a p value = 0.5833 (p>0.05). There is no influence between clean and healthy living behavior on the incidence of infection of hemodialysis patients with double lumen catheter installation at Siloam Kupang Hospital.
