Abstract

Dhandhanggulo is a traditional healing practice established in 2009 in Prasung Village, Sidoarjo Regency. Its existence stems from concern about the community's limited access to formal healthcare services, while also serving as a means of preserving local wisdom. This article aims to describe the traditional healing practice of Dhandhanggulo, examine its health, social, and cultural benefits, and capture the values of solidarity reflected in its services. Observations indicate that Dhandhanggulo integrates herbal concoction services with traditional therapies, supported entirely by uncompensated volunteers. Some ingredients are grown locally, while others are obtained from the market. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the practice served thousands of patients from within and outside Sidoarjo. These findings underscore Dhandhanggulo's crucial role not only as an alternative healthcare service but also as a medium for cultural preservation and strengthening social solidarity.

Abstract

A system dynamics approach can map complex cause-and-effect relationships, feedback loops, and time delays in waste management systems. Rural waste issues, such as those in Durung Bedug Village, demand integrated strategies to prevent overflow at Temporary Disposal Sites (TPS) and reduce residual waste sent to the Jabon Landfill. This study aims to develop a dynamic model of the TPS 3R system in Durung Bedug Village to analyze its behavior and formulate optimal strategies for reducing waste volume. Key variables analyzed include waste generation rates, infrastructure capacity, community sorting participation, and 3R processing effectiveness. Model simulations were conducted for 20 years (2025–2044) using STELLA software. The results show that the Combined TPS 3R Scenario (2.45% mechanical sorting and 5% biological composting) is the most effective strategy, achieving a cumulative reduction efficiency of 7.45% per year. This scenario increases upstream processed waste from 86,286 kg (2025) to 104,538 kg (2044) and lowers residual waste to Jabon Landfill to 1,300,550 kg by 2044, compared to Business as Usual (1,370,804 kg). These findings offer strategic recommendations for village authorities to sustainably optimize TPS 3R operations.
