Abstract

This study examines the factors influencing rice production volatility in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province, a region marked by severe climatic and geographical constraints that pose challenges to its long-term agricultural stability. As rice is central to national food security and economic stability, understanding its production dynamics in vulnerable regions, such as NTT, is crucial. The province exhibits considerable volatility and disparities in rice production across its 22 districts. This study aims to analyze the influence of harvested area, rainfall, Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of the agricultural sector, and population on rice production. Employing a quantitative approach, this research uses secondary panel data from 22 districts over the period 2018–2024. Using STATA/SE 17, the analysis applies a Fixed Effects Model (FEM) with a log-log specification to control for unobserved inter-district heterogeneity. The main results show that harvested area and rainfall are the primary factors significantly influencing rice production at the aggregate district level. The elasticity of harvested area is 0.964, underscoring its role as the most critical driver of production. Rainfall, with an elasticity of 0.048, also contributes positively, reflecting the importance of water availability for productivity. In contrast, the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of the agricultural sector and population size do not exhibit significant effects within the model. The FEM explains 82.65% of the within-district variation in production, indicating strong explanatory power. These findings suggest that policy efforts should focus on safeguarding productive agricultural land and improving water resource infrastructure to enhance regional food security and farmer welfare in NTT.

Abstract

Cashew nut farming is one of the leading plantation commodities in Ngada Regency with the potential to improve the economic welfare of the community; however, farmers are still faced with price fluctuations and limitations in product downstreaming. This research was conducted in Masumeli Village, Soa District, Ngada Regency. The aims of this study were to: (1) determine cashew nut farming income, (2) assess the financial feasibility of cashew nut farming, and (3) identify the appropriate marketing strategy for cashew nut farming development in the area. The study was conducted purposively with a sample size of 30 respondents selected from a total population of 120 cashew nut farmer households. Data were analyzed using income analysis, financial feasibility analysis with investment criteria of Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Net Benefit-Cost Ratio (Net B/C) at a 12% sensitivity interest rate, as well as SWOT matrix analysis to formulate the marketing strategy. The results showed that the average net income of cashew nut farming was IDR 9,696,581 per farmer/year or IDR 15,230,236 per hectare/year, with a total revenue of IDR 10,723,333 per farmer/year and IDR 16,842,932 per hectare/year. Cashew nut production reached 714.89 kg per farmer/year or 1,122.85 kg per hectare/year. The financial feasibility analysis empirically demonstrated a positive NPV of IDR 31,395,300 (NPV > 0), an IRR of 42.33% (IRR > 12%), and a Net B/C Ratio of 1.86, indicating that cashew nut farming is highly feasible for long-term development. The SWOT analysis indicated that the business position is in Quadrant I with an aggressive strategic recommendation (Strength-Opportunity), which entails maximizing internal strengths to capture market opportunities through increasing production continuity, accelerating the downstreaming of processed post-harvest cashew products to add value, and optimizing farmer group institutions to strengthen farmers' bargaining power against middlemen.

Abstract

Abstract

Productivity in lowland rice farming within dryland archipelagic regions is often constrained by imprecise input management rather than a lack of technology. Farmers in Kupang Regency typically employ conventional intensification by increasing fertilizer inputs without considering marginal efficiency, leading to cost escalation. This study aims to deconstruct the structure of input usage, analyze allocative inefficiency, and formulate strategies for managerial redesign. A survey was conducted on 80 rice farmers in Noelbaki Village, Central Kupang District, selected using Proportional Random Sampling. Data were analyzed using the Cobb-Douglas production function and the ratio of Marginal Value Product (MVP) to input price. The findings reveal a significant efficiency gap: seeds have an elasticity of 0.418 but are underutilized, while fertilizers have an elasticity of 0.499 but are overutilized. The scale of operation is at decreasing return to scale (0.967). This study recommends reallocating budgets from fertilizer expenditure to high-quality seeds and strengthening farmers' financial literacy as managerial innovations to achieve economic sustainability and food security in East Nusa Tenggara
