Abstract

Abstract. This study on the monitoring of the diversity and abundance of wildlife around the wildlife corridor area on Highway 304, which passes through Khao Yai and Thap Lan National Parks, was conducted during September 2017 and May 2021 using camera traps to constantly monitor the area. A total of at least 51 wildlife species from 30 families, 14 orders were recorded. The species with the highest abundances were Sambar Deer, Wild Boar, Northern Pig-tailed Macaque, Gaur, Northern Red Muntjac, Siamese Fireback, Malayan Porcupine, Red Junglefowl, etc. The wildlife species recorded include 2 critically endangered species, 3 endangered, 10 vulnerable, 1 near threatened. In this study we also recorded images of a Fishing Cat, which is the first photographically record in this World Heritage Site. The evenness index indicates that the wildlife community in the area is stable. No significant differences in the diversity and abundance of wildlife before or after the corridor construction were seen. The wildlife in the area were active throughout the day. We also found that the highway is the main factor effecting the presence of wildlife. The study results show the importance of this area that the highway passes through. Building wildlife corridors between the two national parks is very important for maintaining the wildlife community as well as continuity. Suggestions from the study include management of human activity in the area including traffic, noise, vehicle speed and living activities in the area that may attract wildlife closer to the community and cause other impacts.

Factors influencing appearance and suitable habitat for wild elephants in the Khao Yai National Park, Thailand. Biodiversitas 25: 3061-3072. Protected areas are designated to conserve biodiversity and provide a safe habitat for wildlife. This study aims to investigate the factors affecting elephant appearance and changes in habitat. The maxEnt program was used to analyze data derived from the patrolling system with constant quality monitoring. Four categories of environmental factors, climatic, physiological, biological, and anthropological factors were used to analyze the wild elephant data yearly from 2017 to 2022. The aim was to understand the effect of environmental factors on the wild elephants’ appearance and their habitat suitability. The results showed an average area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.81±0.004 SD. The results indicated that climatic (42.97%), physiological (32.62%), and anthropological (21.23%) factors affected the appearance of wild elephants significantly. Temperature factors showed the highest percentage contribution (39.04%), while water sources and salt licks, considered physiological factors, contributed 22.13% and 5.06%, respectively. Habitat suitability analysis revealed that the majority of the park area (64.91%) was categorized as unsuited and poorly suited habitat areas, while 35.07% was categorized as moderated and well-suited habitat areas for wild elephants. Implementing strategies to improve water sources and salt lick sites within the park and managing the area to minimize human disturbance both on the surrounding boundaries and the tourist destination sites are recommended to manage the wild elephant.

Spatial distribution of the ethnomedicinal plant Aglaonema simplex at the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station, Northeastern Thailand. Biodiversitas 25: 3043-3050. Aglaonema simplex Blume (Araceae) is an evergreen herbaceous plant used ornamentally and in traditional medicine. Although the usefulness of this plant has been widely studied and reported, its ecology remains poorly understood. In this study, we examined the effects of various environmental factors on the spatial distribution of A. simplex in a Dry Evergreen Forest (DEF) at the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station (SERS) in Northeastern Thailand. All individual plants were counted; their positions were recorded within a 16-ha Forest Dynamics Plot (FDP), and their distribution pattern was analyzed using Ripley's K function. The spatial distribution of A. simplex was determined using a generalized linear model that incorporated plant density and topographic and edaphic variables within the 16-ha study plot. We found a total of 11,232 A. simplex individuals with a density of 702 individuals ha-1, with a clumped distribution pattern. The modeling results showed that the spatial distribution of A. simplex was positively influenced by soil clay content, soil pH, exchangeable magnesium, and adult tree density; it was negatively influenced by sapling density and rocky outcrops. These findings contribute to the broader understanding of the ecological niche of A. simplex. They can be used to design integrated land management approaches that balance ecological conservation with economic development goals.
