Abstract

Abstract. This study on the monitoring of the diversity and abundance of wildlife around the wildlife corridor area on Highway 304, which passes through Khao Yai and Thap Lan National Parks, was conducted during September 2017 and May 2021 using camera traps to constantly monitor the area. A total of at least 51 wildlife species from 30 families, 14 orders were recorded. The species with the highest abundances were Sambar Deer, Wild Boar, Northern Pig-tailed Macaque, Gaur, Northern Red Muntjac, Siamese Fireback, Malayan Porcupine, Red Junglefowl, etc. The wildlife species recorded include 2 critically endangered species, 3 endangered, 10 vulnerable, 1 near threatened. In this study we also recorded images of a Fishing Cat, which is the first photographically record in this World Heritage Site. The evenness index indicates that the wildlife community in the area is stable. No significant differences in the diversity and abundance of wildlife before or after the corridor construction were seen. The wildlife in the area were active throughout the day. We also found that the highway is the main factor effecting the presence of wildlife. The study results show the importance of this area that the highway passes through. Building wildlife corridors between the two national parks is very important for maintaining the wildlife community as well as continuity. Suggestions from the study include management of human activity in the area including traffic, noise, vehicle speed and living activities in the area that may attract wildlife closer to the community and cause other impacts.

Abstract

Wildlife-vehicle collisions in Khao Yai National Park, Thailand: Impact on native species for some conservation management. Biodiversitas 23: 3050-3061. Wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) remain a major challenge in wildlife management worldwide, especially in conservation areas with transport routes passing through. This study was operated along a 48 km long highway, which conducted 207 surveys in a natural world heritage site from February 2018 to January 2019. A total of 391 wild animal carcasses were found in 90 species. The carcasses found, according to the taxonomic group, were reptiles (67.52%), followed by mammals (14.83%), amphibians (4.35%), birds (3.32%). Reptiles were most affected by road use, especially tortoises in Family Geoemydidae and Family Testudinidae that two critically endangered species were found. This study found that members of Family Colubridae were most affected that 26 species, a total of 144 animal carcasses were found, accounting for 29.15% of the number of all carcasses. The most affected species were forest garden lizard (Calotes emma) in the Family Agamidae, where 99 carcasses were found, accounting for 25.31% of the total. In March showed the highest number of the carcasses, followed by April. All of the carcasses found in the evening slightly more than the morning indicated that wild animals died more during the day than at night. The number of vehicles day-1 significantly affected wildlife mortality per day. Reducing the number of vehicles per day-1 entering and reducing vehicle speed, including the number of tourists, as well as banning travel at night, would mitigate the problem. Further, educational signage about wildlife diversity and the risk of road mortality should be installed at the park to remind visitors about the unique fauna in the national park and emphasize the importance of conservation.

Review: The status of the endangered Eld’s deer (Rucervus eldii) and conservation actions in Thailand. Biodiversitas 23: 5020-5034. The endangered Eld’s deer (Rucervus eldii) once roamed throughout the plains and dry forests of South and Southeast Asia. However, due to heavy poaching and habitat loss, the population has declined drastically and has disappeared from many of its historical ranges. They are presently found in some natural areas of India, Myanmar, Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Hainan Island, China. Thailand used to be the distribution center of the species, where two subspecies, the R.e. thamin and R.e. siamensis, were found. However, both subspecies have disappeared from the natural resources of Thailand since the early 1990s. Many conservation programs have been conducted to save this species in Thailand, such as captive breeding and reintroduction. Our literature review revealed that currently, more than a thousand R.e. thamin are housed in over 20 wildlife breeding facilities and 109 R.e. siamensis in 8 breeding facilities. Based on the workshops on conservation and restoration of the species, suitable genetic selection can create populations suitable for return to protected forest areas in Thailand. At present, more than 554 R.e. thamin have been released back into the wild in 8 wildlife sanctuaries, 3 national parks and 1 non-hunting area and 27 R.e. siamensis were released in 2 wildlife sanctuaries in Thailand. The follow-up of the deer in the release areas was flawed. Major knowledge gaps include recent trends in the population dynamics, habitat selection, diet items and threats. Identifying and restoring suitable dry forest habitats for reintroduction are also keys for species conservation.
