Davallia is an epiphytic fern genus that shows high morphological variations in many characters. This genus is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropic areas. The diversity of Davallia has not been explored and recorded in many regions, including in Sumatra Island and its surrounding small islands. Therefore, this research aimed to study the diversity of Davallia species in Sumatra and the nearby small islands based on morphological variation, as well as to investigate their distribution and ecology. Samples were collected from Kerinci Seblat National Park (NP), Bukit Tiga Puluh NP, Siberut NP, Sipora Island, North Pagai Island and South Pagai, Bukit Barisan Grand Forest Park, and Bukit Barisan Selatan NP. In total, 369 specimen sheets (i.e.145 specimens from field explorations and 224 specimens from Herbarium Bogoriense collections) were examined its morphological characters. The results showed that as many as 13 species of Davallia were recorded in Sumatra and the nearby small islands. The species found are D. angustata Wall., D. corniculata T. Moore, D. denticulata (Burm. f.) Kuhn var. denticulata, D. divaricata Blume, D. heterophylla Sm., D. hymenophylloides (Bl.) Kuhn, D. parvula Wall., D. pectinata Sm., D. pentaphylla Blume, D. repens Kuhn, D. solida (G.Forst.) Sw. var. solida, D. trichomanoides Blume var. lorranii (Hance) Holttum, D. trichomanoides Blume var. trichomanoides, and D. triphylla Hook. Ten of which were new records for this location. There were 12 spesies found in Sumatra Island except D. parvula Wall. and 11 species found on the small islands around Sumatra except for D. corniculata T. Moore and D. divaricata Blume. Davallia denticulata (Burm. F.) Kuhn var. denticulata and D. solida (G.Forst.) Sw. var. solida had the largest number of specimens found. Almost all species had a random distribution pattern at altitudes of 1000-1500 m above sea level.

Biodiversitas 24: 4589-4596. Davallia is a member of the family Davalliaceae, which has a wide distribution in the Malesia region. The classification of this genus based on morphological and molecular data shows differences that cause the relationship among species to be debated until now. This study aimed to examine the phylogeny of Davallia from Sumatra and Mentawai Islands, Indonesia based on trnL-F intergenic spacer (IGS) sequence data. A total of 26 accessions representing 10 Davallia species were selected as ingroup and Oleandra articulata (Sw.) C.Presl as an outgroup was downloaded from Gen-Bank (accession number KF667613.1). Data analysis using the Maximum Parsimony (MP) method confirmed Davallia into 2 clades with divided into 7 subclades. Results showed that trnL-F IGS sequence as a non-coding gene explains the grouping species in Davallia. trnL-F IGS sequence can estimate species identity caused by changes in nucleotide bases from mutation. The MP analysis showed each species was resolved as monophyletic. Based on the phylogenetic tree, the longest branching was found in D. corniculata, suggesting that this species is the most primitive in the genus of Davallia in this region. Thus, the trnL-F marker effectively showed the relationship among species in Davallia in Sumatra and Mentawai Islands.

Abstract. Kamaliah TL, Syukur M, Maharijaya A, Hidayat P. 2025. Short Communication: Oviposition and chlorosis scoring for early screening of chili resistance to whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). Biodiversitas 26: 6410-6416. Bemisia tabaci is a major pest of chili. The objective of this study was to establish a rapid screening technique for chili resistance, based on oviposition and chlorosis parameters. The research was conducted in the plastic houses of Sinar Alam Sari, Cibeureum, Bogor, Indonesia, from June to December 2021, using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Eight chili genotypes (Capsicum annuum cv. Adelina, Anies, C12, Kencana, Laris, Landung, Ungara, and Yuni) were infested with four non-viruliferous whiteflies per leaf in a no-choice test. The number of eggs and early instar nymphs was counted on the 7th and 10th days, respectively, while chlorosis was scored on the 21st day after infestation. Results showed significant differences among genotypes. Landung and Yuni were the most susceptible, with the highest egg counts (52.83 and 51.17 per leaf), nymph counts (48.17 and 47.50), and severe chlorosis (score 3-4). Ungara was highly resistant, with the lowest egg (9.00) and nymph counts (4.83), and minimal chlorosis (score 1-2). A strong correlation was observed between high egg/nymph numbers and severe chlorosis, which was objectively validated by RGB image analysis showing a near-perfect negative correlation between chlorosis score and the NGRDI (-0.995). The study concludes that combining egg count and chlorosis scoring—supplemented by digital RGB/NGRDI validation—provides a novel, simple, efficient, and reliable method for the early screening of chili resistance to B. tabaci, offering an integrated method of breeding programs.
