Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengeksplorasi kesulitan mahasiswa dalam menulis yang akan diteliti melalui dimensi writing dan eror yang banyak dihadapi oleh mahasiswa dalam mata kuliah Essay Writing. Penelitian deskriptif dengan desain explanatory digunakan sebagai metode dalam penelitian ini untuk menginvestigasi kesulitan mahasiswa dalam menulis yang akan dianalisis dari nilai menulis dan konstruksi kalimat di dalam esai sebab-akibat. Secara purposive, sebanyak 25 mahasiswa semester empat yang mengikuti mata kuliah Essay Writing menjadi subjek dari penelitian ini. Tes Menulis Esai (EWT) digunakan untuk memperoleh data tulisan mahasiswa. Hasil dari pengumpulan data berbentuk nilai menulis mahasiswa yang dibandingkan dari lima dimensi mahasiswa yaitu (isi, organisasi, struktur bahasa, kosakata, dan aturan bahasa tertulis) and analisis eror pada level kata dan kalimat. Eror yang sudah dianalisa kemudian diklasifikasi berdasarkan tipe error. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dimensi menulis mahasiswa berada pada poin 2-3 berdasarkan rubrik penilaian yang berarti bahwa mahasiswa masih berada pada tingkat penulis dasar dan bawah dasar. Selain itu, eror yang banyak ditemukan dalam esai meliputi penulisan huruf kapital, tanda baca, kalimat tanpa subjek atau predikat, ejaan, persetujuan subjek-predikat, kalimat tidak efektif karena penerjemahan langsung dari Bahasa Indonesia, pemilihan kata, kata benda, kata depan, predikat, kata sifat, artikel, susunan kata, kalimat pasif, dan kepemilikan (‘s). Hasil dari penelitian ini bisa menjadi data dasar bagi guru/dosen untuk mengetahui kesulitan-kesulitan mahasiswa dalam menulis secara menyeluruh dari dimensi menulis dan tipe-tipe eror dan selanjutnya untuk membantu mahasiswa menulis lebih baik. Kata kunci: kesulitan menulis, dimensi menulis, analisis error, menulis esai

Abstract

This research aims to investigate English written spelling ability of students, with understanding types of spelling error, and causes of spelling error to prevent students with such repetition of error. Dictation test is used to test students' spelling ability. The subject of this research is seventh grade students of MTs Baniy Kholiel. There were 23 participants and 6 students as sample. The research used descriptive qualitative and error analysis as the research design. The data were collected through dictation test, interview and content analysis. The results found eight types of spelling error, such as; letter add 4%, letter omit 18,05%, transposition letter 0,39%, doubling letter 2,50% , vowel substitution 18,70%, consonant substitution 19,36%, change of word 10%, and missing word 28%. Causes of spelling error are students' weakness on vocabulary mastery, influence of L1, weak in phonological knowledge in stressing letter, blending sound, deletion of sound, and identifying sound in word. Weak in morphological knowledge such as: singular and plural form, and article (a/an and the), and less appropriate instruction of spelling ability in English. Abstract

The objective of this research is to develop the application of multimedia based Zello Walkie Talkie as strategy to improve students’ speaking ability of first grade A students of SMK Kesehatan Medika Farma . The research design used is action research. The data of the study are in the forms of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process and interviewing the students of class XA. The procedures of the research were done through planning, acting, observing and reflecting. Based on the qualitative data, applying Zello Walkie Talkie media gave the students more chances to speak in English. These findings were also supported by the result of the students’ speaking scores. The mean improved to 79.6.  It indicates that they made a considerable improvement in some aspects of speaking skills such as pronunciation, fluency, grammar, and vocabulary. Abstract

The present study aimed to explore the students’ writing difficulties examined from the five dimensions and common errors faced by students in Essay Writing Course. Descriptive research with explanatory design was employed in this study to investigate the students’ writing difficulties which are analyzed from writing score and the sentence constructions in their cause-effect essay writing. This study purposively sampled 25 fourth semester students who join the Essay Writing Course. Essay Writing Tests (EWT) is used to get the data of students’ writing. The results of data collection were in the forms of students’ writing scores compared from each dimension (content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics) and error analysis based on the word and sentential levels. The errors analyzed, then, were classified into error types. The results yielded that students’ writing dimensions are between 2-3 points based on the scoring rubric which means they are still in basic and below basic writers. In addition, the most error types analyzed covered capitalization, punctuation, sentence fragments, spelling, subject-verb agreement, run-on sentences as literal translation from Indonesian, word choices, nouns, preposition, verbs, adjective, articles, word order, verb tense, passive voice, possessive (‘s), and transition words. The result of study could be a basic data for the English teachers/lecturers to know the students’ writing difficulties thoroughly from each dimension of writing and error types and further to assist them to write better. Abstract

There is a vast amount study of vocabulary assessment strategies by professional educators and a number of methods have emerged to gauge vocabulary competence. However, only a limited number of literatures analyze the use of online application to assess EFL students’ vocabulary level, especially in Indonesia. To fill this gap, this study employs Ant-Word Profiler App to classify students’ vocabulary level on final exam in advanced paragraph writing course among Indonesian undergraduate EFL Learners. Drawing on the Laufer Theory (1997) on factors which affect vocabulary learning, this study showcases the group of participants challenge their vocabulary mastery as they were routinely engaged to the writing class. The participants were, second semester students at Indonesia tertiary Institution who enrolled in Advanced Paragraph Writing course range from 19 to 22 years old. This descriptive interview study utilized a corpus-based research in vocabulary context of writing course. The AntWordProfiler app generates lexicon statistics and recurrence about the corpus of the text. The primary categories of the data collected are the overall quantity of running words in a apecific content of the given text. The results demonstrate that students at different stages of writing proficiency used a low percentage of Advanced vocabulary indeed on the final exam of the course. The implication of this study calls for the interactive vocabulary and writing pedagogy to enrich vocabulary mastery for students of language teacher education.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate student’s perception in writing skill through Edmodo Media at Second Grade of SMK Kesehatan TPA Jember. This research was categorized as mixed method.The design of this research was convergent parallel design; the purpose of a convergent mixed methods design is to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. The research subjects in this research are second grade students which are consist of 66 students as population, 33 students are chosen to be a sample, but the researcher chooses 3 students that representative from any kind of students to make the research efficiently. The data of the study were in the forms of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained by interview, observation and documentation. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were acquired conducting through questionaries. The result of questionaries showed the students’ perception on writing skill through Edmodo have 75,1% students agree in Edmodo, it means that students have positive perception in learning writing through Edmodo.

Abstract

This research is limited to the students’ perspective toward the use of photovoice in the teaching and learning process. The objective of this study is to explore the perspective of students about the use of photovoice on the teaching and learning process in speaking class. The research use qualitative interview study with a descriptive design. The researchers collected the data by individual semi-structured interviews. The writter choose telephone inteview with current conditions (Covid 19). Data analysis used is thematic analysis by (Braun, Virginia & Clarke, 2006). Interview were transcribed verbatim to ensure data integrity by double-checking the transcripts with recorded interviews.The researh findings show 7 theme based on interview with students who describe their perspectives and experiences in learning photovoice. These themes are: 1) experiences, 2) social, 3) intellectual, 4) speaking, 5) emotion, 6) challanges and difficulties, and 7) future direction of photovoice

Abstract

This content analysis study aimed to identify speech act in Indonesian EFL Textbookentitled Think Globally Act Locallypublished by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MONEC) in 2018. The procedure of analyzing the data are, read and reread the textbook, identifying the forms of speech acts in EFL textbook, coding, the researcher classifying relevant data representing illocutionary, tabulating the frequency and percentage of each speech act, describing and interpreting the data in order to address the statement of problem.Drawing upon the Searle’s (1977) categories, I found 52 kinds of speech act categorized as Illocutionary act; representative, commissive, directive, expressive, and declarative. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that textbook representedvarious speech acts that could help learnersin their EFL learning.

Abstract

Based on informal interview with the English teacher and preliminary study test of SMP Madrasah Tsanawiyah Miftahul Ulum Suco Lor had problem in speaking and it was shown by the average score of the preliminary test is 37% student get score more than 65. This study aimed to determine the learning process and the learning outcome of student’s speaking ability during the English conversation. The type of research is classroom action research (CAR). The Procedure used is the model cycle. Based on the results of the study, the percentage of students in the first cycle of activity individually obtained 58,5% and in the second cycle students’ activity individually obtained 95%. While the daily test results of students in the first cycle obtained average value 78,26% and 95,65% in the second cycle. It is proved that the learning process is a fan of student learning outcomes can be improved with the use of speech recognition application.

Abstract

The popularity of Task-Based Learning (henceforth, TBL) approach has risen the effectiveness in enhancing learners’ competence, since it was proposed in 1980s. However, there has been limited research about investigating participants’ writing skill with TBL-mediated in EFL domain. This study investigated the impact of TBL in writing skill of undergraduate students at Indonesian University. This present study employs a qualitative interview study to declare the result of impact of utilizing TBLT as approach which assist to boost the undergraduate students’ writing skill. Fifteen participants from a private university in Jember, Indonesian are voluntarily involved and subsequently interviewed in this research. Datal were collectedl through lsemi-structured interviewsl to get in-depth information with respect to their experiences related to the impact of utilizing TBLT in their writing skill. Based on the data finding Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) has a positive impact on undergraduate students' writing skills in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) domain. TBLT provides students with authentic and meaningful writing tasks that help them develop their writing skills in a practical context. TBLT also promotes students' engagement, motivation, and collaboration, which are essential factors in improving writing proficiency.
