Abstract

Flat-top bifocal glasses have a near segment located at the bottom of the lens. Inappropriate frame selection can cause suboptimal positioning of this segment, forcing users to adopt unnatural head postures when reading, thus potentially triggering asthenopia. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the accuracy of eyeglass frame selection and asthenopia complaints in flat-top glasses users. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 82 flat-top glasses users selected by consecutive sampling. Data were collected through structured interviews using an asthenopia complaint questionnaire and physical examination by an optometrist to assess frame accuracy based on parameters: near segment height, pantoscopic angle, and vertex distance. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. A total of 65.9% of respondents (54 people) experienced asthenopia complaints. The proportion of inappropriate frame selection was significantly higher in the group with asthenopia (83.3%) compared to the group without asthenopia (21.4%) (p < 0.001). The most frequently inaccurate frame parameter was inappropriate near segment height (p=0.001).There is a significant relationship between inappropriate eyeglass frame selection and asthenopia complaints in flat-top glasses users. The accuracy of frame fitting, especially the near segment height, is a critical factor that must be considered.

Abstract

The development of modern fashion has transformed eyeglasses from a visual aid into a lifestyle accessory and a form of self-identity, particularly among university students. This study aims to explore students’ preferences for eyeglass frame models in the modern fashion era and to identify the factors influencing these preferences. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 university students who use eyeglasses, selected using purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns and themes related to frame selection preferences. The findings revealed that eyeglasses are perceived not only as a visual aid but also as a fashion statement and identity expression. Five major themes emerged: (1) eyeglasses as a lifestyle and identity, (2) preference for trendy frame designs such as oversized and minimalist styles, (3) dominance of neutral colors due to their flexibility, (4) the importance of comfort in prolonged use, and (5) the significant influence of social media in shaping preferences. Among these factors, fashion trends and social media were found to be the most influential in determining students’ choices. In conclusion, students’ preferences for eyeglass frame models are influenced by a combination of aesthetic, functional, and social factors. Therefore, optical practitioners should consider not only visual and ergonomic aspects but also fashion trends and user preferences when recommending eyeglass frames.
