Abstract

This research is conducted to investigate how Indonesian people give compliment to others in English to find the formula of the compliment the students use. The subject of the research is 27 Indonesian students of English Department from three universities. The data are collected by giving questionnaire to the students using the Discourse Completion Task. Students are asked to complete the sentences for giving compliment. The compliments requested are about appearance which consists of hairstyle, dress and figure; and ability and performance which consists of test result, getting the scholar and cooking ability. The result shows that for appearance, the most used formula is by using the word look then the use of be+adj. For ability and performance, students use the word congratulation and be+adj for cooking ability. However, some students give compliment based on Bahasa Indonesia form, not English form by giving some statements which are not related to the context. It is affirmed that compliment is influenced by the language that the people use and it is different from one culture to another.DOI: 10.24071/ijhs.2019.030110

Abstract

The word ‘how’ in Man’s Search for Meaning by Victor E. Frankl was translated into many words in Bahasa Indonesia. This research was aimed to know how the word ‘how’ translated into different words in Bahasa Indoneisa. The data were collected from English and Indonesian version books of Man’s Search for Meaning written by Victor E. Frankl. The researcher found there were 51 words ‘how’ which were translated into 9 types of words in Bahasa Indonesia and 10 words ‘how’ which were omitted. The result shows that there are 2 types of the word ‘how’, based on the function. They are as adverb of manner and as subordinating conjunction of noun clause. The function might cause why the word ‘how’ was translated into different types of words in Bahasa Indonesia. The translation of the word ‘how’ into Bahasa Indonesia was not only changing its word, but also considering the function of the word to produce the equivalence between the SL and the TL. In other words, the translation must consider the function of the word ‘how’ as well as its meaning.

Abstract

Bahasa Indonesia has a lot discourse markers. This paper tries to find the use and the meaning of discourse markers in Bahasa Indonesia which appear in the initial position. The data are gathered from the movie entitled “3 Dara”. The research employed Schiffrin’s theory in discourse markers: must be detachable, contextualization cues and multifunction. The findings show that the markers are mostly to emphasize the intention of the speakers. The markers exist to make the conversation go smoothly and naturally. Most of the discourse markers do not have semantic meaning but they have ‘meaning’ in the conversation especially in the intention of the speakers. Some are to emphasize the points that the speaker wants to, others are to make the conversation go smoothly, and some are to function as hedges. Those markers are important in the conversation despite of their meaning. Without markers, conversation will be dull and boring.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of grammatical errors written by students of STBA LIA Yogyakarta, academic year of 2011/2012. The aims of this thesis were to find out the most common grammatical errors in the academic essay written by the students of STBA LIA Yogyakarta and to find out the possible causes of errors. Errors are part of learning, difficult enough to avoid. To study students’ errors, the approach that was used was Corder’s error analysis. The error analysis included identification, description and explanation errors. The grammatical error types were categorized into errors of overgeneralization, transfer, and simplification by omission. The result indicated that the errors made by the students were mostly in simplification by omission (60 times) followed by overgeneralization (35 times) and transfers (7 times). Those errors were caused by interference of mother tongue and learning strategies which are false analogy, incomplete rule application, and overlooking co-occurrence.

Abstract

One of the processes that should be taken in the process of translation is reviewing the translation. This step must be taken before a translation product becomes the final text of the translation. In that process, peer feedback is needed. This article is research about the use of peer feedback in the process of reviewing student translations. The research was qualitative research. It was conducted based on the activities of a translation class in STBA LIA Yogyakarta. The research aims to see whether there is an improvement in the final results of student translations on their translation products based on their peer feedback. In this research, students are asked to translate some Indonesian texts into English. The translation then was given some comments and suggestions by their peers before they revised the translation to be the final product. The data were taken based on the students’ translation products. The peer feedback and Componential analysis theory are used as the basis of analysis in this research data analysis. The results showed that peer feedback could not be used as a basis for improving translation results due to the same difficulties among peers themselves over problems in the process of selecting and restructuring translating text from Indonesian as a source language to English as a target language. The role of the lecturer in this matter is still needed in Translation Class at STBA LIA Yogyakarta.

Abstract

It is commonly known that there are some problems of education in schools in Indonesia. One of the problems is related to teachers. Teachers, in education managements, can be the agent of change as well as the implementer of the curriculum. In doing those two roles, there are three areas of responsibilities, namely instruction, management, and politics which relates to the policy made by the teacher in the classroom. This paper is going to underline the problems of the teachers’ roles in those three areas seen from the school practice in Indonesia. Since this research discusses the problems and solutions which relate to ideal conditions and ideas, the research applies the library research. The problems of the teacher’s role are viewed based on experiences by 12 teachers who were from different areas in Indonesia but they were in the same class in PPG (Training on Professional Teachers). The data were taken based on by asking them to tell their own experience related to the three areas. Based on the teachers’ experience, the solution is proposed based on some theories which are related to the problems. Further, it will also put forward the possible solution for those problems. The solutions, of course, are proposed by experts whose theories are employed by this research. The result shows that the solution needs some practical trainings and actions in every policy.

Abstract

Mistakes are common things in learning of a language. Students make mistakes when learning because of some process such as interlingual transfer in which learners’ L1 influences the process of L2 learning; interlingual transfer where learners sometimes make overgeneralization of a language rule; and the third is the context of learning where sometimes students get false concept since they do not use the real context of communication. This study was taken at a college in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This paper tries to answer two questions; (1) What kind of error do the students make during their final oral examination? and (2) What are the sources of the error that the students make? By classifying and analyzing the errors, and employing the theory by Taylor and Dulay et al. it is found that the errors are dominated by omission and addition. Those errors are caused by the negative interlingual and intralingual transfers which lead to false concept the students grabs during their learning process.
