Abstract

Education does not merely function as a means of knowledge transfer but also as a process of character building, particularly at the elementary school level. However, learning practices that predominantly emphasize cognitive aspects have led to the low internalization of values such as honesty and patience among students. This study aims to examine the values of honesty and patience in the Balinese folktale Cupak and Gerantang and to analyze its relevance as a medium for teaching the Balinese language in elementary schools. This research employs a qualitative approach using a literature study method. Data were collected from the story text and relevant references, then analyzed through the identification and interpretation of character values. The findings indicate that the character Gerantang represents honesty and patience, while Cupak reflects the opposite traits. The use of folktales in learning effectively integrates language skills and character education in a contextual manner. Therefore, the folktale Cupak and Gerantang is an effective learning medium for fostering students character while preserving local culture.

Abstract

Balinese language learning in elementary schools plays a crucial role in preserving local culture and instilling moral values in students. However, in practice, learning is often less engaging and fails to fully shape students' character. Therefore, contextual and meaningful learning innovations are needed, one of which is through the use of Balinese folktales (satua). This study aims to describe the implementation of Balinese language learning based on the "Pengangon Bebek" (Duck Story) as an effort to instill moral values in elementary school students. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collection techniques consisting of literature review and learning observations. The results indicate that the use of the "Pengangon Bebek" (Duck Story) in learning can increase students' interest in learning, facilitate language comprehension, and instill moral values such as responsibility, hard work, and honesty. Thus, satua-based learning can be an effective alternative for integrating cognitive and affective aspects in elementary school students.

Abstract

Balinese folktale (satua) as a form of local wisdom-based oral literature has a significant role in Balinese language learning, especially for elementary school students. This study aims to examine the utilization of satua ‘Men Tiwas teken Men Sugih’ as a media for Balinese language learning based on local wisdom. The method used is qualitative descriptive through a literature study approach. The results of the study show that satua ‘Men Tiwas teken Men Sugih’ contains intrinsic elements and moral values relevant to Balinese language learning, including honesty, hard work, and social concern. The utilization of this satua as a learning media can improve students’ language skills while also cultivating character values. It is recommended that satua be integrated systematically in Balinese language learning in elementary schools.
