Abstract

Background: Non-communicable disease (NCDs), particularly cardiovascular diseases, are the leading cause of death globally. One of the contributing risk factors is increased blood lipid levels, including total cholesterol and triglycerides, which can be influenced by smoking habits. Purpose: To describe total cholesterol and triglyceride levels among adult and elderly smokers. Method: This study used a descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach, with a sample of 36 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and laboratory tests using the CHOD-PAP method for total cholesterol and GPO-PAP for triglycerides. Results: The majority of respondents were adults (55.6%) and elderly (44.4%). Based on smoking severity, the majority of respondents were categorized as moderate smokers (58.3%), light smokers (36.1%), and heavy smokers (5.6%). All respondents had smoked for more than 10 years (100%). The results showed normal total cholesterol levels in 66.7%, borderline levels in 19.4%, and high levels in 13.9%. Triglyceride levels were categorized as normal (77.8%), borderline levels in 13.9%, and high levels in 8.3%. The average total cholesterol level of respondents was 189.19 mg/dL, with a minimum value of 123 mg/dL and a maximum of 282 mg/dL. Meanwhile, the average triglyceride level was 117.28 mg/dL, with a minimum value of 41 mg/dL and a maximum value of 482 mg/dL. Conclusion: Most adult and elderly smokers had normal total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. However, borderline to high cholesterol and triglyceride levels were still found, especially in respondents with moderate to heavy smoking and smoking duration of more than 10 years. Age, smoking level, smoking duration, diet, and physical activity are suspected to influence total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in active smokers.   Keywords: Smokers; Total Cholesterol; Triglyceride.
