Abstract

This study addresses the low level of arm muscle strength among male students at SMK Muhammadiyah 8 Pakis, where initial push-up performance averaged only 12–15 repetitions per minute—falling below the ideal standard for adolescents. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured gym training program in improving students' arm muscle strength using a measurable, scientific approach. An experimental method employing a Single-Subject Research (SSR) A-B design was used. The subjects consisted of three male students aged 15–18 who met the inclusion criteria (S-1 Budiono, S-2 Alif Marsya Aditya, and S-3 Abdul Halim). The study was conducted over five weeks, comprising Phase A (Baseline)—lasting one week with three measurements taken without intervention—and Phase B (Intervention)—lasting four weeks with the implementation of a structured gym training program consisting of three sessions per week (12 sessions total). The training program utilized a "push-pull-shoulder" split routine with a progressive intensity of 60–75% of the 1-Repetition Maximum (1-RM). Arm muscle strength was measured periodically using three variations of a one-minute push-up test: Diamond, Standard, and Wide Push-Ups. Data were analyzed using visual graph analysis and descriptive statistics. The results demonstrated that all subjects experienced a highly significant and consistent increase in arm muscle strength week-over-week. By the end of Phase B, total push-up capacity increased from a baseline average of 36.0 reps/minute to 79 reps/minute (+119.4%) for S-1; from 35.0 reps/minute to 80 reps/minute (+128.6%) for S-2; and from 28.0 reps/minute to 61 reps/minute (+117.9%) for S-3. The average percentage increase across all subjects reached 122.0%. Based on a visual analysis across phases, a Percentage of Non-overlapping Data (PND) of 100% was obtained, indicating that the gym training program intervention had a very strong effect on the dependent variable, with no data overlap.
