Abstract

The workshop was held on 23–24 August 2025 as part of a literacy competency development program for 30 students at Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Dakwah dan Komunikasi Islam Al-Mardliyyah Pamekasan. The activity aimed to strengthen students’ ability to write scientific articles and newspaper opinion pieces effectively and ethically, grounded in social realities. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, involving participants in problem identification, planning, writing practice, feedback, revision, and reflection. The workshop was supported by laptops, LCD projectors, internet access, and relevant learning materials. The main achievement was a substantial improvement in participants’ writing competencies, with scientific article writing comprehension rising from 42.78% on the pretest to 92.22% on the posttest, a 49.44 percentage-point increase, and newspaper opinion writing comprehension rising from 43.33% to 92.78%, a 49.45 percentage-point increase. The greatest improvements were observed in understanding article structure, research methodology, argument development, and conclusion writing. Practical writing exercises and intensive feedback enabled participants to apply the concepts learned and improve their manuscripts. Based on predetermined criteria covering structure, factual accuracy, argumentation, language use, and journalistic ethics, one outstanding manuscript was selected and deemed suitable for submission to an online newspaper as the target publication. Beyond the immediate improvement in writing competence, the workshop contributed to sustainable student literacy development by strengthening writing confidence, critical thinking, journalistic awareness, and readiness to produce evidence-based and publishable manuscripts. Thus, the activity demonstrates that PAR-based journalism workshops can provide a practical and sustainable model for developing students’ scientific and journalistic literacy within higher education.
