Abstract

Contemporary political dynamics in Indonesia reveal a stark paradox between electoral democratic procedures and the reality of sovereignty co-opted by oligarchic forces through mechanisms of state capture. This study aims to analyze public perceptions of oligarchic political practices in Indonesia through the lens of Islamic political thought, specifically the principle of distributive justice. A descriptive-qualitative method was employed, utilizing a contemporary political approach integrated circularly with cross-platform digital discourse analysis. Primary data were drawn from Jeffrey A. Winters’ theoretical framework on oligarchy and authoritative Islamic texts, while secondary data were obtained by observing public discourse on YouTube and X, platforms that reflect collective societal grievances. The findings indicate that the public perceives oligarchy as a form of "structural injustice" manifesting in institutional corruption, cabinet factionalism, and the hijacking of village economic sovereignty. From a theological perspective, these practices are found to fundamentally contradict the spirit of Surah Al-Hasyr, verse 7, which prohibits the concentration of wealth solely among a handful of elites (kai la yakuna dulatan baina al-aghniya’ minkum). The study concludes that strengthening political morality grounded in the concept of amanah (trust/stewardship) and restoring the state's distributive function are critical imperatives for reclaiming the public interest (maslahah al-ammah) from the grip of the materialistic interests of a few capital holders.
