Abstract

This study examines the contribution of fathers' Big Five Personality traits (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Emotional Stability), as perceived by their children, to the faith-learning motivation of Christian theology students in Indonesia. Using a quantitative correlational cross-sectional design, data were collected from 355 theology students (semesters 2-8) across 11 Christian theological institutions through an online questionnaire and analyzed using multiple linear regression. Results show that the five personality dimensions simultaneously contribute significantly to faith-learning motivation, F(5, 349) = 3.197, p = .008, though the effect size is small (R2 = .044). Among the partial contributions, only Openness shows a significant positive contribution (B = 0.236, p = .002). Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, and Emotional Stability show no significant contribution, while Extraversion shows a significant negative contribution that contradicts the hypothesized direction, likely reflecting a statistical suppression effect from high intercorrelation among the Big Five dimensions rather than a substantive effect. These findings suggest that fathers' openness, reflected in dialogical and reflective engagement, is the personality dimension most relevant to strengthening children's faith-learning motivation, offering a basis for families, churches, and theological institutions to design more dialogical and reflective faith formation strategies.
