Abstract

Introduction: Female adolescent is a group prone to iron deficiency anemia due to various factors such as having monthly menstruation and poor diet. Therefore, anemia prevention behavior needs to be done from an early age to avoid prolonged health problems. The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors that correlated with anemia prevention behavior in female adolescents based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Methods: This study used a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study is female adolescents in Madiun City. Purposive sampling was used to obtain 105 respondents. The instrument used was a questionnaire to measure the variables attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, intention, and anemia prevention behavior. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rho Test with a level of significance ≤ 0.05. Results: There is a relationship between attitudes (p = 0.003; r = 0.292), subjective norms (p = 0.006; r = 0.266), and perceived behavioral control (p= 0.002; r = 0.299) with the intention to prevent anemia and also perceived behavioral control (p = 0.003; r = 0.292) and intention (p = 0.000; r =0.392) with anemia prevention behavior. Conclusions: Better attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and intention possessed by a female adolescent will make better anemia prevention behavior too. Therefore, support from various parties is needed to intensify the promotion of anemia prevention, education on early detection of anemia, especially for female adolescents, and further research to determine effective health promotion methods.

Abstract

Cancer survivors undergo a health-illness transition (HITs) from diagnosis to survivorship phase, which affects their quality of life and treatment. This study aims to determine the extent of readiness for the HITs transition among cancer survivors through a scoping review method based on the Arksey and O'Malley framework. We searched the ScienceDirect, PubMed, SpringerLink, and Wiley databases for studies addressing cancer patients and transition readiness in oncology care settings. The inclusion criteria were the ones that met the original English-language articles published between 2020 and 2024. Review articles, study protocols, and books were excluded. The screening procedure adhered to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, and article eligibility was assessed by three researchers using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist (2020). Ten articles were acquired, indicating that the majority of survivors had low to medium levels of transition readiness, particularly throughout the treatment and survivorship phases. This readiness is affected by support from family, peers, and healthcare professionals, along with several individual factors, including age, length of diagnosis, insurance status, patient competence, physical and emotional condition, cancer stage, treatment status, and access to health services and information. These results affirm that readiness for the HITs requires attention by providing appropriate support and strengthening individual factors. Future studies are expected to evaluate transition readiness from the diagnosis phase to enhance the integration and optimization of the care process, hence improving the overall quality of life for cancer survivors.

Abstract

Purpose: Preconception care (PCC) is fundamental to preparing for a healthy pregnancy by reducing risk factors. However, there are still various obstacles to its implementation. This review aims to identify risk factors and barriers to accessing and implementing PCC. Methods: The research design used a scoping review compiled from articles obtained from four databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and Web of Science. The inclusion criteria include original articles published between 2020 and 2025 that are fully accessible, written in English, and reports on PCC risk factors and barriers. Exclusion criteria include theoretical articles without practical applications, research related to specific medical conditions, and articles that are not relevant to the research objectives. The selection process was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR (2020) guidelines. Data from selected articles were extracted and synthesized narratively in accordance with the Update Methodological Guidance for the Conduct of Scoping Reviews (2020). Results: A total of 896 articles were found in the search. After screening, 14 articles were selected for analysis. These articles represented eight countries, including Ethiopia, the United States of America, and Australia. Low PCC knowledge, poor obstetric history, and maternal age were the most frequently discussed risk factors for PCC. Meanwhile, barriers to PCC implementation were attributed to the lack of PCC guidelines and service standards, low PCC education and promotion, and low motivation and knowledge of healthcare workers. Conclusion: The implementation of PCC remains hindered by policy limitations, system readiness, and health worker capacity, underscoring the need for further research as a basis for developing comprehensive guidelines.

Abstract

Introduction: Cancer patients have a complex journey. Technological developments offer convenience in communicating and accessing health information. Cancer patient portals were developed to coordinate and integrate care by overcoming existing barriers. This study aims to explain the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of using patient portals in oncology services. Methods: The design of this study was a systematic review, with the source articles drawn from PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, EBSCOhost, and Scopus. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to screen articles with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A critical appraisal was conducted using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist 2020 and the MMAT 2018. Narrative descriptive approaches are used for data synthesis. Results: We screened 3,301 articles using inclusion, exclusion, and duplication criteria, resulting in 10 articles for analysis. Communication and care coordination (n=4) were among the main benefits of using patient portals. Perceived obstacles such as limited resources (n=2), socio-demographic challenges (n=3), and limited information sources (n=2) are still found. On the other hand, the use of patient portals creates opportunities to address information needs and provide assistance (n=1), increase security and privacy (n=1), and improve service efficiency (n=2). Conclusions: Patient portals play an essential role in improving coordination and engagement among cancer patients, despite ongoing challenges related to access and digital literacy. For nursing, these portals strengthen nurses' roles in education, coordination, and the use of evidence-based technology to improve the quality of care.

Abstract

Anxiety is a psychological response often experienced by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and can affect the patient's physiological condition and comfort. Various non-pharmacological therapies are used as a supportive approach to help reduce anxiety during cancer therapy. This scoping review aims to map the types of non-pharmacological interventions used, the duration of implementation, the measurement tools used, and the reported effects on cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The scoping review design refers to the Arksey & O'Maley framework in two databases, namely PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar grey literature, and is adjusted to PICO. The inclusion criteria for this study included original research articles written in English, published between 2010 and 2025 to ensure the latest scientific evidence, and specifically discussing non-pharmacological therapies in reducing anxiety in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Secondary data-based studies, protocol articles, preliminary studies, and books or book chapters were excluded from the review. A total of 10 articles were synthesized, and the interventions found included group music therapy, listening to instrumental music during radiotherapy, traditional Thai massage, aromatherapy massage with lavender, zikir therapy, and interventions based on reading the Qur'an and music. Anxiety was measured using psychological instruments such as Beck Anxiety Inventory-Cancer (BAI-C), Distress Thermometer (DT), Brief Symptom Rating Scale-5 (BSRS-5), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), General Comfort Questionnaire (GCQ), dan Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), as well as physiological parameters such as blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration, and oxygen saturation. The results of the study showed a decrease in anxiety, stress, and distress, an increase in comfort and well-being, and changes in vital signs after the intervention was given. These findings indicate that non-pharmacological therapy was applied using various methods and durations and assessed using psychological and physiological instruments, with reported effects on patients' anxiety levels during cancer therapy.

Abstract

Ectopic pregnancy Ectopic pregnancy is an obstetric condition with serious clinical consequences. This study aims to map the risk factors and location of ectopic pregnancy implantation based on the latest evidence. The design of this study is a scoping review with literature searches conducted on May 20–23, 2025, through ScienceDirect, PubMed, Web of Science, and ProQuest. Inclusion criteria included open-access original articles published between 2020 and 2025 that reported risk factors and implantation sites for ectopic pregnancy. Theoretical articles and instrument development studies were excluded. The selection and synthesis process followed the PRISMA-ScR (2020) guidelines, the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist (2020), and the Guidance for Conducting Systematic Scoping Reviews (2015). Of the 5,519 articles identified, eight studies with observational (n=7) and cross-sectional (n=1) designs met the criteria. The synthesis results showed that a history of previous ectopic pregnancy was the most consistently reported risk factor, followed by a history of surgery and infertility. The most common implantation site was the fallopian tube, particularly in the ampulla, fimbria, and isthmus. These findings emphasize the importance of comprehensive identification of risk factors to support more effective prevention, early detection, and long-term management strategies

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in adolescents is on the rise annually. Various initiatives have been implemented to mitigate morbidity and mortality rates.  However, the incidence of STIs among adolescents remains alarmingly high, highlighting the need to strengthen preventive measures and expand access to high-quality screening services. Objective: To identify and categorize strategies for improving prevention and screening behaviors relate to STIs among adolescents. Method: The investigation employed a comprehensive review design. Articles were procured from four databases: PubMed, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. All articles were evaluated for their suitability to address the research questions using the Population, Concept, Context (PCC) as well as inclusion and exclusion criteria. Article screening was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Review (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines (2020), and the Guidance for Conducting Systematic Scoping Review (2015) was followed to extract the data. Results: The search yielded 6,073 articles. Based on the screening, 8 articles were analyzed further. Most of the articles reported that prevention and screening for STIs were more common among adolescent girls. Some methods of improving STI prevention and screening include education, counselling, discussion, campaigns, the utilization of technology (tablets), and facilitator training. Conclusion: Improving STI prevention and screening among adolescents requires specific strategies and approaches. Effective strategies and approaches must take into account the developmental characteristics of adolescents, the influence of the social environment, and the role of peers in shaping health behaviors. Further research is needed to develop peer support-based interventions for adolescents to promote STI prevention and increase participation in STI screening.

Abstract

Background: Cancer is a medical condition that contributes to high mortality and morbidity rates globally. Physical activity (PA) is one preventive measure that can be taken to prevent cancer. This literature review aims to identify the role of PA in cancer prevention. Methods: This scoping review utilized scientific articles sourced from four major databases: ScienceDirect, Wiley, PubMed, and ProQuest. The included articles were original research studies published between 2020 and 2024. The research question and keywords were developed based on the PCC framework: Population (P): adolescents, adults, and older adults; Concept (C): physical activity related to cancer prevention; and Context (C): hospital and community settings. The review process followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines (2020). Results: A total of 7,281 articles were found in the search. Based on the screening conducted, 10 articles were selected for further analysis. Most articles reported that engaging in PA can reduce various cancer risks. Other articles identified barriers to PA, such as lack of social support and low motivation. However, these barriers can be overcome with adequate supportive factors.  Conclusion: Engaging in regular PA can help prevent cancer incidence. However, supportive policies, access to facilities, and reliable information are essential to increase participation. Further research is needed to develop tailored PA recommendations, especially for vulnerable populations.
